The General Laborer is responsible for safely performing a variety of construction duties to assist highway, utility, grade crews or on‑site plant locations. This position involves manual tasks performed under the supervisor’s instruction, with minimal direct supervision except for more complex jobs.

• Highway Laborer
  • Prepares ground surfaces for road building and removes debris.
  • Operates ground compactors, levels dirt, sets string markers and clears path for paving.
  • Sets up fencing, barricades, and safety cones.
  • Prepares manhole covers, openings and water lines; may insert risers.
  • Walks behind paver machine to shovel and rake asphalt, levels it, and removes buried manhole covers and valve boxes.
  • Cleans asphalt from tools and equipment after each workday.
  • May assist with operating equipment such as paver, roller, backhoe, water truck, etc. if trained.
  • Performs other laborer tasks such as cutting concrete or asphalt with a saw, sweeping, etc. as needed.
• Utility Laborer
  • Hand‑shovels to prepare ground trenches for pipes and utility lines; may dig up existing lines (water, sewer, conduit).
  • Attaches trench boxes and pipes to chains or guide wires for movement by heavy equipment, and installs shoring materials.
  • Guides pipes into place while the equipment operator maneuvers them.
  • Connects pipes with tools, lubricants, glue, grout, etc.
  • Builds couplings, connectors, and mechanical joints; cuts pipe to size.
  • Sets up and operates laser level tripod and pipe lasers.
  • May operate front‑end loader, excavator, backhoe, skid steer, or other construction equipment if trained.
• Grade Laborer
  • Hand‑shovels and rakes for groundwork.
  • May cut concrete with a saw as needed to finish grades.
  • Removes and replaces sewer/manhole/sump castings and covers.
  • Assists the grader with grading tasks as required.
  • Performs other laborer duties as required.
  • May operate skid steer and other equipment if trained.
• Crusher Laborer
  • Performs machinery maintenance and repairs, including unplugging, shoveling off conveyors and screens, changing screens, rollers, cone liners, and greasing moving parts.
  • Handles crusher machinery set‑up and tear‑down, runs cables and hoses, assembles and disassembles machinery, and operates skid steer to move parts.
  • Keeps crusher area clean of debris and aggregates.
  • Operates equipment such as skid steer and loader (if trained) to move excess materials.
• Plant Laborer
  • Participates in daily THINK/TRACK meetings and weekly safety meetings.
  • Assists in plant production and ensures efficient plant operation.
  • Stockpiles materials and feeds hot plant from stockpiles efficiently.
  • Ensures all assigned equipment is maintained, clean, and in safe working order.
  • Prepares plant for operations at season start and performs shutdown procedures at season end.
  • Operates front‑end loader, skid steer, end dump truck and other heavy equipment as needed.
  • Performs plant maintenance and repairs, including welding tasks.
  • Sets up and takes down traveling plants at various job sites as required.
• Other Duties
  • Uses various equipment, hand and power tools.
  • Retrieves and delivers construction materials at job sites.
  • Performs site clean‑up.
  • Assists with flagging and traffic control as needed.
  • Maintains tools and equipment in safe and clean condition.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

• Education/Experience
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Previous related construction experience a plus.
• Work Requirements
  • Read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Write correspondences and memos.
  • Perform basic arithmetic with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
  • Apply common sense to follow written or oral instructions.
  • Work well with others in team settings.
  • Use inventory and order processing systems and two‑way radio for communication.
