Overview

Purpose
:
The Transition Specialist provides support to the instructional program with responsibilities for recruiting students for job placements; coordinating with state and government agencies working with persons with disabilities; providing information and/or direction to students; and promoting programs with staff and parents. This position reports to the Principal.

Education
:
High School Diploma or equivalent

Responsibilities
  • Acts as liaison between students and employers to maximize the potential for student success in the workplace and to assist employers working with persons with disabilities.
  • Assists vocational coordinators, teachers, and related staff to support lesson plans and develop students' vocational skills.
  • Coordinates with state and federal agencies and programs for guidelines on program implementation and client services.
  • Coordinates employer and school partners to meet the work education objectives.
  • Counsels students in independent living skills, social skills, employability skills, soft skills, hygiene, careers, etc., to help them become self-sufficient.
  • Counsels students in career education and job-search skills to inform them of employment and career options.
  • Maintains a variety of confidential and non-confidential lists and records for documenting activities and providing reliable information for future reference and follow-up.
  • Monitors students' job locations to ensure compliance with applicable child labor laws, insurance guidelines, and safety.
  • Monitors students' performance at work sites according to program guidelines; visits job sites; obtains employer evaluations; serves as a liaison between employer and student; identifies areas needing additional training.
  • Participates in meetings (e.g., in-services, staff meetings, job placement meetings, Community Trainings) to convey and gather information required to perform functions and stay current with program guidelines.
  • Prepares a variety of documents and reports (e.g., work credits, hours worked, quarterly evaluations, reviews) for communicating information to administrators and staff.
  • Promotes the program to the business community, students, participants, teachers, and parents to recruit participation and define program objectives.
  • Responds to inquiries from internal and external sources (e.g., teachers, community, parents, administrators, counselors) for information and direction as required.
  • Tutors students in vocational skills (e.g., work requirements, interviewing skills) to enhance readiness for employment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient functioning of the work unit.
