Performs work related to accounting according to three levels of increasing responsibility, complexity, and pay grades. The tasks range from entry level professional accounting duties and preparation of financial statements to specialized accounting work at the advanced professional and technical lead level. Accountants are part of the Production-Oriented Career Progression Program.

- Maintains financial records, accounts, ledgers, and journals.
- Reviews and analyzes accounting/fiscal data and records/reports from department/divisions of the Board of County Commissioners or the Office of the Clerk & Comptroller, as part of a financial operations division.
- Prepares standard journal entries and posts transactions to proper accounts.
- Prepares summaries, trial balances, and related reports and statements for assigned division.
- Receives funds, prepares deposits, and reconciles bank statements.
- Conducts field audits within the scope of assigned financial division.
- Reconciles and balances financial statements, inter-fund transfers, grants, and accounting records and ledgers.
In addition to the tasks of an Accountant I:
- Performs more complex accounting functions and activities including disbursements, budget development and analysis, revenue accounting, and preparation of statistical and/or fiscal reports
- Prepares nonrecurring accounting entries and adjustments
- Assists in the preparation of complex analysis and reports on accounting problems or projects
- Participates in the planning and organization of accounting and financial activities within an assigned area, program, and/or system
- Participates in formulating, evaluating, monitoring, and implementing accounting and budgetary policies, systems, controls, and procedures
- Helps to coordinate activities within the division to ensure adequate flow of pertinent information
- Assists in the preparation of operating budgets
- Provides advice and assistance to the division on a variety of accounting problems
In addition to the tasks of an Accountant I and II:
- Provides direction, control, and supervision of assigned accounting and financial functions, programs, and systems, including disbursements, budget development and analysis, revenue accounting, and preparation of statistical and fiscal reports; may manage related functions
- Provides consultation as a technical lead and manages subordinates on specific accounting functions
- Coaches, leads, mentors, guides, trains, and assists, as needed, to ensure effective and timely completion of assignments
- Conducts complex analysis and prepares reports on accounting problems or projects
- Reviews and approves nonrecurring accounting entries and adjustments
- Works with the department director, assistant director, and various division managers to coordinate the preparation and submission of schedules, reports, and data to auditing agencies
- Acts as a lead in evaluating the effectiveness of and recommending changes to existing accounting and budgetary policies, procedures, controls, and systems, and monitors their implementation
