Environmental Specialist Iii

Overview

Environmental Specialist III (pos. ) performs complex technical and training duties in the development and use of plans to protect the public and environment during radiation accidents.

• Assist in developing and presenting radiological emergency response classes to staff and outside agency personnel.
• Assist in developing and conducting classes for first responders and hospital emergency room personnel in radiological emergency response.
• Critique drills and exercises in radiological emergency response and participate in medical service drills.
• Conduct routine radio checks; assist in semi‑annual inventory and restocking of the mobile lab, sample preparation vehicle, field team trailer, and emergency kits after each power plant exercise.
• Maintain calibration records of hand‑held radiation detection instruments used for radiological emergency response.
• Coordinate the annual emergency worker dosimeter program.
• Provide assigned maintenance of building safety, security and support systems; maintain building facilities preservation maintenance and upkeep; conduct state vehicle preventative and routine maintenance.
• Assist in Low Level Waste Inspections, Environmental Monitoring and Sample Collections, Source Support, and Incident Response Management as requested.
• Participate in nuclear power plant exercises and serve as a member of Florida's Radiological Emergency Response Team.
• Be available 24‑hour a day for radiation emergency response duties, including potential work beyond normal hours.

• Knowledge of radiation terminology, principles, and analytical techniques.
• Knowledge of the principles of radiation detection instruments and their use.

• Willingness to work before, during, and beyond normal work hours in emergencies.
• Authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.
• Willing to physically come to the office daily and perform field work.
• Valid Florida Driver’s License.
• Ability to lift 60 pounds of equipment.
• Achieve a minimum of 70% on required training modules and attend all core training courses.

• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent (4 years of experience) in chemistry, physics, health physics, nuclear medicine technology, or related field.
• Professional teaching experience.
