Building Construction Observer

Hanson Professional Services Inc. is seeking an experienced Construction Observer in our Southwest Florida region. This position will be responsible for construction observation, quality control, and documentation of building construction projects. These projects include airport terminals, hangars, maintenance facilities, administrative buildings, cargo facilities, support buildings, parking structures, and other vertical construction and site development projects associated with airport infrastructure. The successful candidate will be responsible for monitoring construction activities to ensure compliance with project plans, specifications, building codes, quality standards, and applicable regulatory requirements.

This position requires travel to work assignments throughout Southwest and Central Florida. Standard work hours are not defined and may vary weekly depending on construction schedules. This is an hourly position where overtime is common. This position is in Southwest Florida, with our regional office located in Sarasota, FL. General

Duties

Perform complex technical construction observation and inspection assignments related to airport building construction, including terminals, hangars, maintenance facilities, support structures, parking facilities, mechanical/electrical systems, building finishes, utilities, and associated site development. Follow general guidance regarding construction task orders and exercise initiative and independent judgment in resolving construction-related issues. Monitor the quality of materials, workmanship, and installation practices throughout all phases of vertical construction.

Verify contractor work complies with contract documents, building codes, approved plans, quality standards, manufacturer requirements, and project specifications. Conduct inspections of structural, architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and building envelope systems. Prepare reports and maintain daily inspection logs; document findings and communicate discrepancies to project stakeholders. Verify construction progress and support review of contractor pay applications and project estimates.

Identify construction deficiencies, delays, non-conforming work, and other project issues; communicate findings and assist with resolution efforts. Document and track field changes, requests for information (RFIs), and modifications to construction documents. Read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, engineering calculations, schedules, and shop drawings. Attend construction meetings with project managers, project teams, clients, contractors, and airport stakeholders. Coordinate with contractors, testing agencies, architects, engineers, and regulatory authorities to ensure quality control and compliance requirements are achieved.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience

High School Diploma or equivalent required, associate’s degree preferred. Minimum of six (6) years of building inspection experience, preferably involving commercial, institutional, aviation, public-sector, or other vertical construction projects. Experience inspecting structural, architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and building systems during construction is preferred. Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, codes, and technical documents. Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to prepare detailed inspection documentation and reports.

This position may require operation of a company vehicle. A current driver's license and clean driving record are required and must be maintained.

Other Qualifications/Experience

In addition to the required minimum qualifications, the following will result in a more competitive candidate:
Post high school coursework related to building construction and/or inspection;
Airport project experience;
Experience with airport terminals, hangars, maintenance facilities, parking structures, or other aviation-related buildings;
Current General Contractor License (Florida or equivalent state licensure); ICC Building Inspector, Commercial Building Inspector, or equivalent inspection certifications;
Quality control/quality assurance (QA/QC) experience on commercial or institutional building projects; FDOT or other DOT construction field, documentation, and material testing certification experience;
