Summary
A recruitment/relocation incentive may be offered to highly qualified candidates. Orlando VA Healthcare System's Surgical Care Service is seeking experienced and dynamic Orthopedic Surgeons. Ideal applicants are those who want to contribute to the achievement of quality care standards, as well as the growth and development of a VA academic hospital program. This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP).
QualificationsTo qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
- United States citizenship; non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
- Doctor of Medicine (or equivalent) from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year of completion.
- Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
- Completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Accepted residencies include ACGME or AOA‑approved programs, or other residencies followed by a minimum of five years of verified U.S. practice as deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee.
- Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA‑accredited residency programs who meet the basic requirements may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed professionals and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee basis; they are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Preferred experience:
Board certification with experience in primary joints and Mako. - Physical requirements:
Must pass a pre‑employment physical examination as required by VA Handbook 5019. Capabilities include light to moderate lifting (15‑44 LBS), light carrying (15 LBS and under), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands, walking up to 2 hours, standing up to 2 hours, kneeling up to 1 hour, rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, near vision 13‑16 inch, far vision 20/20 in one eye and 20/40 in the other, depth perception, color discrimination, hearing (aid permitted), emotional and mental stability, and the ability to work closely with others or alone.
and Compensation
- Competitive salary with annual performance bonus.
- Paid time off: 50‑55 days per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays, and up to 5 days paid absence for CME).
- Retirement:
Traditional federal pension after 5 years vesting; federal 401(k) with up to 5 % VA contribution. - Insurance:
Federal health, vision, dental, term life, long‑term care (many programs can be continued into retirement). - Licensure:
One full, unrestricted license from any U.S. state or territory. - M. CME reimbursement: up to $1,000 per year (must be full‑time with board certification).
- Malpractice:
Free liability protection with tail coverage. - Work schedule:
Monday–Friday 8 am–4:30 pm (shifts may be required based on needs). - Recruitment incentive (sign‑on bonus):

- Participate in the growth and development of a VA academic hospital program.
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams for patient care.
- Adhere to VA policies, standards, and educational requirements.
- Maintain professional licensure and pursue continuing education.
- Contribute to quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
- Engage in clinical education and mentorship as applicable.
