The overall function of the mentor coaches is to give intensive coaching to staff in alignment with the program school readiness goals, curricula, and other approaches to professional development. Mentors will observe and assess the classroom teacher and child interactions during onsite visits for compliance with performance standards. The position will report to the Senior Program Manager of Family Services. Work is performed using independent judgment and performance is evaluated through observation and results achieved.
RepresentativeDuties/Assignments
- Provides mentoring and coaching support to Head Start Staff to provide children and families with nurturing learning environments to support individual social, intellectual, physical, and emotional development.
- Monitors classrooms on a regular basis to ensure that teaching teams avoid activities and materials that stereotype or limit children according to their genders, age, disability, race, ethnicity, or family composition. Inputs data from monitoring into the monitoring data system. Aggregates and analyzes data in order to decide new priorities.
- Engages in focused observations, including live observation by coaching, reviewing videotape of teachers in classroom, or self-monitoring on the part of teacher. Observes & assesses education staff to identify strengths, areas of improvement.
- Works closely with the disabilities and mental health service areas to ensure teachers employ specific early intervention or special education and related services to be provided to each child according to their IEP or special needs.
- Coordinates, plans and conducts training for education of staff throughout the year to increase knowledge and skills with internal and external presenters. Monitor, manage, coordinate, training and prepare reports related to grants received by the Education service area.
- Collects standardized data on classrooms for research, accountability, or evaluation and assess teacher- student interactions using the CLASS tool. Conducts regular double-coding Class sessions with at least two observers code through observation or videotape and check their codes for consistency.
- Collaborates with partners and other service areas to enhance curriculum and literacy activities which promotes children outcomes and school readiness skills. Coordinates education planning committee and parent meetings.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in early childhood education, elementary education, human services or closely related field and two years teaching experience to include one year supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
Preferences- Prior experience with Head Start agencies or early childhood programs.
- Experience coordinating and presenting training programs and planning professional development for early childhood educators.
- Certified observer in CLASS (Classroom Assessment Scoring System) who can score/rate each dimension on a 7 point scale from low to high through the observations of teacher-child interactions.
- Ability to work alternate schedules which may include evenings and weekends.
- Ability to gain knowledge of agency guidelines, contract requirements and program goals.
- Ability to analyze aggregate data for children, parents, and staff and build data reports.
