Valencia College is hiring three Part‑time Instructional Lab Assistants, Sr (Writing Tutors) to join the Writing Center teams. In this position, you will have the opportunity to provide writing assistance for students who need assistance with various types of writing.

About Valencia’s Writing Centers

The Writing Centers at the Downtown campus and West campus offer free writing consultations for students. Writing consultants (tutors) provide assistance with any part of the writing process, including brainstorming, outlining, formatting, and citations. They support various types of college writing, such as essays, lab reports, proposals, scholarship applications, job applications, and cover letters. Writing consultants also collaborate with team members to design and deliver workshops and presentations.

Ideal

Candidate
  • Mastery of the conventions of standard American English
  • Familiarity with the conventions of college‑level writing
  • Ability to explain writing and grammar conventions clearly and concisely
  • Strong communication skills—oral, written, and in group settings
Additional Information
  • This position operates in a primarily on‑site environment.

Essential Job Functions
  • Provide academic support through planning, developing, and coordinating lab activities to support classroom instruction; provide direct instruction to students to assist their learning of specified instructional programs and labs.
  • Hire, schedule, evaluate, and supervise full‑time and part‑time instructional assistants, student lab assistants, and aides; approve timesheets for payroll processing.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and the lab facility in a clean and proper working condition; perform minor maintenance and repairs and notify appropriate personnel of major maintenance and repair needs; maintain inventory of supplies and reorder as needed.
  • Ensure lab safety and security procedures are adhered to.
  • Supervise student procedures, monitor student progress, and review lab assignments for correctness and completion; answer students’ questions about subject matter.
  • Maintain and track laboratory expenditures against the budget.
  • Provide instruction and/or demonstrations to orient students to the use and care of lab equipment and supplies.
  • Attend departmental and instructional meetings; organize and attend special events campus‑wide to inform students of available services.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications
    • Minimum Education:

      Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution
    • Preferred Experience:

      Teaching experience and supervisory experience

      None specified, but proof of training in relevant areas is preferred

    • Knowledge of the discipline assigned
    • Knowledge of rules, regulations, and procedures of the area of assignment

    Working Conditions

    This job primarily operates in a professional office environment. The employee will routinely operate standard office equipment including computers, keyboards, mouse, phones, photocopiers, printers, scanners, filing cabinets, and fax machines. Noise level is usually quiet to moderate. Typical physical competencies include frequent remaining stationary, moving, reaching, positioning self, and occasionally lifting objects weighing 5‑15 pounds. The job also entails frequent communication, discretion, judgment, reasoning, memory, learning, maintaining confidentiality, comprehension, problem solving, and decision making.
