Description of Job Function:
  • Assists students in making their career and life plans based on a review of assessment information, past performances, and future educational and vocational goals.
  • Provides direction and resources related to the research of major and transfer requirement at other institutions.
  • Advises students on choosing the appropriate classes for their major and career/transfer goals.
  • Educates students about the interview process, including: application, resume and cover letter writing, portfolios, and interview techniques.
  • Assists with daily operations of the Career Center, publicizes services, hours, and career materials available to students, faculty and the community.
  • Provides developmental advising related to goal setting, career planning, and educational planning.
  • Orients students to My Career Planner.
  • Maintains accurate records regarding utilization of materials and services.
  • Advise students about careers.
  • Accesses, inputs and retrieves data from a computer.
  • Administers assessments as assigned by Career Center Coordinators, and Counselors.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Education:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED).

Preferred Education & Field of Study:

Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.

Experience working in an educational services department dealing with educational records.

  • Knowledge of college’s policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of educational policies and graduation requirements of multiple colleges and universities.
  • Knowledge of current career trends.
  • Skilled in interpersonal communications and interviewing procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member with flexibility and thoroughness in the performance of assigned duties.
  • Ability to access, input, and retrieve information from a computer.
  • Ability to work effectively in the community and meet student needs.

Working Conditions:

This job primarily operates in a professional office environment. The employee will routinely operate standard office equipment including but not limited to computers, keyboards, mouse, phones, photocopiers, printers, scanners, filing cabinets and fax machines. While performing the duties of this job, the noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.

Typical physical competencies include but are not limited to frequently remaining stationary, moving, reaching, positioning self and occasionally ascending/descending, lifting/moving objects weighing between 5-15 pounds. This job also entails frequently communicating, discerning and exchanging information, detecting and perceiving objects up close, at a distance, and the ability to adjust focus. Cognitive abilities include but are not limited to frequently using discretion, judgment, reasoning, memory, learning, maintaining confidentiality, comprehension, problem solving, and decision-making.
