The Controls and Tuning Support Engineer I is an entry-level, early-career position designed for individuals with limited experience in Gas Turbine Controls. This role provides a structured introduction to the field, with the primary responsibility being the successful completion of the Turbine Controls & Tuning Engineering training and development program.
Throughout the program, the Controls and Tuning Support Engineer I will gain hands-on experience by applying fundamental controls engineering concepts in both laboratory settings and real-world, on-the-job training environments. This position serves as a foundational step toward developing the technical expertise and practical skills required for a long-term career in turbine controls and combustion tuning engineering.
This training and development program will consist of structured classroom and lab-based learning environment with rotational on the job training (OJT) opportunities with experienced Controls and Tuning Engineers in the field. There will be clear milestones and criteria defined for progression through the training and development program with instructor lead sessions and feedback throughout the process.
Key Responsibilities- Be available for travel as required (up to 50%) by land and/or air for training assignments, including overnight and extended stays at job sites.
- Successfully complete the Turbine Controls Engineering training and development program, including classroom instruction, lab exercises, and field exposure.
- Develop a fundamental understanding of essential Gas Turbine operations and principles.
- Develop a fundamental understanding of MHI control systems architecture, operation, and key components.
- Assist with basic logic and graphics modifications under the supervision of experienced engineers.
- Participate in hands-on lab sessions to learn and practice field wiring, signal tracing, and basic calibration techniques.
- Support senior engineers during combustion tuning activities to gain exposure to tuning processes and system behaviors.
- Observe and assist in routine troubleshooting procedures to begin developing diagnostic and problem-solving skills.
- Learn and follow safety protocols, engineering standards, and documentation procedures used in field operations.
- Assist with the setup and removal of temporary monitoring and diagnostic equipment, such as CABS, CASS, and SMCT.
- Participate in field assignments as needed to gain exposure to site conditions, equipment, and real-time systems operation.
- Practice report writing and documentation of training activities, findings, and observations.
- Demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment and take direction from mentors and supervisors.
- Comply with all safety policies, practices and procedures, and report all unsafe activities to Management and/or Human Resources.
- Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.

- Education and/or
Experience:
Bachelor's degree (BA) in Engineering from four‑year college or university; or at least two (2) years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. - Language
Skills:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Japanese language fluency or Spanish language fluency would be an asset. - Reasoning Ability:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. - Computer
