Critical Operations Engineer II role summary:
The Critical Operations Engineer II ensures operational integrity and regulatory compliance of the data center electrical, mechanical, fire life safety systems, and communications infrastructure. This role is on the Night Shift (10:00pm - 8:00am, Wednesday - Saturday).
- Data center subject matter expert for electrical, mechanical, controls, and fire life safety systems.
- Operate, monitor, maintain, and respond to abnormal conditions in facilities systems (Electrical, Mechanical, Communications, Building Monitoring and Control).
- Tracking and trending operational characteristics.
- Mentoring of junior staff.
- Work with the site Data Center Manager to track and complete preventive and predictive maintenance schedules.
- Determine maintenance requirements for mechanical and electrical systems with guidance to the site Data Center Manager.
- Ensure data center operates at maximum operational efficiency; analyze operating conditions, recommend new technologies, and pursue cost reductions.
- Manage systems to avoid unplanned, customer-impacting outages.
- Manage data floor and back-of-house mechanical loading to maximize cooling efficiency.
- Provide applied mechanical and integrated control expertise for the entire data center.
- Serve as a knowledge expert regarding fire and electrical codes.
- Prepare procedures for preventative or corrective maintenance activities.
- Assist Data Center Manager with maintenance discrepancy tracking and issue resolution.
- Trouble Ticket Management and Work Order Completion processes.
- Infrastructure projects (Internal/Customer):
Cage Build-Outs, Overhead Installations, Rack and Stack, CMMS navigation, problem-solving using developed procedures. - Asset and consumable inventory management and proper labeling of equipment.
- Ensure SLA adherence and data uploads to OSS.
- Provide physical security within Core Site premises and exceptional customer service.
- Incident escalation and report writing; monitor building fire alarm system; conduct regular facility and security tours and address issues.
- Knowledge:
- Expert understanding of electrical and mechanical systems used in data center environments (electrical distribution, transformers, PLCs, generators, switch gear, UPS, HVAC, chilled water systems, CRAC/CRAH, sprinkler systems).
- Expert knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, NFPA 72, NFPA 25, and building codes related to fire life safety.
- Expert knowledge of fiber optics/cabling infrastructure and industry best practices.
- Expert knowledge in industrial safety practices (lockout/tagout, arc flash protection, OSHA and state regulations).
- Experience with data trending/tracking and analysis and ability to learn and use PC-based monitoring systems.
- Skills:
- 5-7+ years in installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting large commercial/industrial systems (chilled water, large centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, water treatment, HVAC, CRAC/CRAH, humidification, BMS/PLC controls, diesel generators, fuel systems, 480/277 and 208/120 distribution, static UPS, pre-action systems).
- Proven leadership, and experience laying out, pulling, dressing, terminating fiber and copper cabling.
