Critical Operations Engineer II Role

The Critical Operations Engineer II drives operational integrity and regulatory compliance of data‑center electrical, mechanical, fire life‑safety, and communications systems. This role supports a 4‑hour Swing Shift (3:00 PM–11:00 PM, Monday–Friday) and works closely with the Data Center Manager to maximize uptime and reduce costs.

  • Serve as the data‑center subject‑matter expert for electrical, mechanical, controls, and fire life‑safety systems.
  • Operate, monitor, maintain, and respond to abnormal conditions in facilities systems.
  • Track and analyze operational characteristics for continuous improvement.
  • Mentor junior staff and share best practices.
  • Collaborate with the Data Center Manager to develop and complete aggressive preventive and predictive maintenance schedules.
  • Provide guidance on mechanical and electrical maintenance requirements.
  • Analyze existing operations, recommend new technologies, and improve efficiency and cost‑effectiveness.
  • Manage systems to avoid unplanned, customer‑impacting outages.
  • Ensure mechanical loading capacities maintain optimal cooling efficiency.
  • Provide applied mechanical and integrated control expertise across the data center.
  • Act as the primary knowledge expert for fire and electrical codes.
  • Document procedures for preventative or corrective maintenance in a technical writing capacity.
  • Assist the Data Center Manager with maintenance discrepancy database management and resolution of site issues.
  • Handle trouble tickets and work‑order completion processes.
  • Lead internal and customer infrastructure projects.
  • Project tasks include:
    • Cage build‑outs
    • Overhead installations
    • Rack and stack
    • Navigate and utilize a CMMS system
    • Use developed procedures to solve problems
    • Assist in asset and consumable inventory management
    • Track and proper label all equipment
    • Ensure timely completion of SLA processes and data upload to OSS
    • Maintain physical security on Core Site premises
    • Provide day‑to‑day customer service and support
    • Escalate incidents and write reports
    • Monitor building fire alarm system
    • Conduct facility and security tours, documenting findings
  • Promote Core Site’s Principles of Operational Excellence and guiding principles.
Requirements Knowledge
  • Expert understanding of electrical and mechanical systems in a data‑center environment, including electrical distribution, transformers, PLCs, generators, switch gear, UPS, STS, ATS, PDU, chilled water systems, CRAC/CRAH, pre‑action sprinkler systems.
  • Expert knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, NFPA 72, NFPA 25, and fire‑life‑safety compliance and building codes.
  • Expert knowledge of fiber optics/cabling infrastructure and industry best practices.
  • Expert knowledge of industrial safety best practices (lockout/tag‑out, arc flash, OSHA, state regulations).
  • Strong data‑trending, tracking, and analysis skills with experience using PC‑based monitoring systems.
Skills
  • 5–7 years experience installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting large commercial/industrial systems (chilled water, large centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, heat exchangers, VFDs, pumps, HVAC, CRAC/CRAH, humidification, BMS, PLC controls, diesel generators, fuel systems, 480/277/208/120 V electric generation and distribution, static UPS, double interlock pre‑action systems).
  • Proven leadership and communication skills.
  • Expert fiber and copper cabling installation, pull, dress, terminate.
  • Experience diagnosing and repairing IT hardware, servers, network switches, and structured cabling.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project).

  • Coordinate, supervise, and communicate with contractors performing maintenance or upgrades.
  • Quick learning and problem resolution, both during normal hours and after hours.
