Position SummaryThe Chief Engineer executes repairs and regular maintenance of our fleet of Transport Canada inspected passenger vessels and associated equipment. As part of the engineering team, the Chief Engineer is responsible for troubleshooting problems as well as designing and implementing solutions. The Chief Engineer completes daily job assignments and duties and reports on the status of work assignments.

- As the Chief Engineer on duty, ensure the safe and reliable operation of all vessels, systems, machinery, and equipment under his/her care with due regard for the Safety Management System (SMS), proper standards of watchkeeping, and in accordance with practice of good seamanship.
- Routinely inspect all areas of the vessels and dock for unsafe conditions and assist in accident investigations and reports.
- Stand engine room watch, monitoring and noting performance of engines, machinery, and all auxiliary equipment.
- As head of Marine Engineering on board ship, the Marine Chief Engineer works closely with the Captain to ensure that the physical aspect of the vessel is completely under control.
- Participates in emergency drills in accordance with Transport Canada regulations, the Safety Management System.
- Participates in safety meetings in conformance with City Cruises Toronto policy, to ensure a routinely efficient and safe operation at all times and the proper use of equipment during any possible emergency.
- Maintains engineering operations and maintenance logs, paying particular attention to proper recording of incidents and irregularities.
- Chief Engineer is responsible for administering the Planned Maintenance System. The Chief Engineer shall administer the R&M budget including purchasing and ensure budgetary control is maintained by the department.
- Upholding the operational standard and conducting maintenance and repair of hull, structure and all mechanical and electrical equipment.
- Ensures a clean workplace throughout the day, at the beginning and end of shifts.
- Reports non-conformities to the Designated Person (Associate Director, Marine Operations).
- Ensures the safe and efficient operation of the business at all times using all available means.
- Chief Engineer is responsible for the maintenance of technical operation records and files and for keeping a sufficient stock of bunkers and lubricants as well as ordering according to Company Procedures.
- Conducts short safety meeting/Tool Box meeting with direct reports for the current job prior to operations. Ensure that each personnel are made aware of the hazards and is fully aware of their responsibilities.
- Plan, schedule and delegate tasks to the maintenance team.
- Provide all necessary guidance and coaching to all direct subordinates during operations for a proper execution of the job.
- Supports Food & Beverage and all other departments with projects, maintenance, and operations as required.
- As the Engineer on duty, in the absence of the Director of Marine Operations and Associate Director, Marine Operations, coordinates engineering activities.
- Provide technical leadership and operational expertise to the engineering team.
- Immediately notifies the Master of the vessel if any critical system as laid out in the Safety Management System is not functioning.
- Ensures that all Safety Equipment is present, and equipment is inspected to the relevant standards.
- Knows and understands both the Operational and Emergency procedures laid out in the Safety Management System.
- Adheres to all health and safety regulations.
- Works with a safety mindset by following all safety policies, procedures and safety measures (i.e. PPE). Identifies and brings forward risks, hazards and opportunities on the job. Actively participates in health and safety in the workplace.
