Position Overview

Middle Market Portfolio Manager ("PM") is responsible for independent underwriting, structuring, and ongoing portfolio management of complex, sponsor‑owned and leveraged middle‑market credit relationships. The PM serves as a credit subject‑matter expert and the first line of defense, providing credible challenge to business partners, leading credit structuring and documentation discussions, and ensuring risk is identified, mitigated, monitored, and communicated throughout the life of the relationship.

Key Responsibilities
  • Underwriting – lead the entire commercial underwriting process, analyze financial statements, provide independent analysis, recommend loan structures, and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • 30% Portfolio Management – monitor portfolio performance, proactively develop risk solutions, manage amendments, and uphold risk‑rating integrity and compliance.
  • 20% Client Calling Effort – expand client relationships through direct calling, develop risk‑aligned solutions in partnership with internal product teams.
  • 20% Subject‑Matter Expertise – partner with Investment Banking peers, maintain knowledge of commercial banking solutions, and share industry trends.
  • 15% Deal Team Management – mentor and coach junior PMs, Associates, and Analysts.
  • 15% Span of Control – no direct reports; maintain communication with clients, portfolio teammates, relationship managers, risk managers, and external audit/examiner functions.
  • Decision Making and Autonomy – provide independent risk views and recommendations, subject to ultimate risk‑approval officer.
  • Problem Complexity – handle moderately complex, leveraged, PEG‑affiliated, and sensitive relationships.
  • Leadership, Influencing, Negotiating – mentor junior talent and partners.
  • Project or Program Management – maintain a large portfolio and lead platform‑wide activities beyond day‑to‑day responsibilities.
  • Nature and Area of Impact – deliver solid credit analysis, risk‑rating recommendations, and identify key risk drivers.
Working Conditions

Full‑time regular position with 1st shift (United States of America). English fluency required.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance or related field and at least 7 years of progressive experience in middle‑market credit and/or mid‑corporate underwriting, leveraged finance, sponsor finance, and portfolio management.
  • Proficiency with MS Office desktop applications.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Sound credit skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize workflow and multi‑task in a fast‑paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Prior experience in a similar role with a commercial financial institution.
  • Mastery of Truist Bank operating systems and commercial applications (e.g., MRA, , nCino).
