The Orange County Planning Division is currently seeking a Planner to join our Community Planning & Placemaking Section. This Section consists of a team of innovative professionals who manage a variety of projects that support the county’s goal for targeted growth and quality redevelopment. For this position, we are seeking an individual with an educational background and/or professional experience in urban design and planning, architecture, or landscape architecture, to help us develop creative and innovative solutions for complex urban problems.
In addition, this individual would work closely with our Research & Economic Development Section by implementing best practice approaches, facilitating interdepartmental team meetings, and coordinating work program assignments that support efforts to reorganize the County’s Comprehensive Plan and to create “Orange Code”, our new form-based land development regulations.
All work is performed with independence under the direction of the Chief Planner and is evaluated on a regular basis through observations, on-on-one coordination meetings, and levels of productivity. Potential candidates should be extremely organized, have strong written and verbal communication skills, and be capable of thriving in a high-pressured environment.
Representative DutiesPlanner I (Urban Design) - Community Planning & Placemaking Section
- Assists other planners with work products related to major work elements
- Reviews proposed changes to the Comprehensive Plan and Code, and assists other section members with the facilitation of interdepartmental meetings
- Participates in meetings with stakeholders, special interest groups, homeowner associations, developers, and the general public
- Assists other planners with the preparation of documents and supporting materials for public meetings, including but not limited to maps, diagrams, handouts, agendas, and PowerPoint presentations
- Provides excellent customer service to citizens, public officials, and development community representatives regarding land use and zoning-related matters, development/redevelopment potential, and other administrative procedures
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Planner II (Urban Design) - Community Planning & Placemaking Section
- Independently manages and executes assigned projects with limited supervision
- Reviews proposed changes to the Comprehensive Plan and Code, and facilitates interdepartmental team meetings on such matters
- Participates in meetings with stakeholders, special interest groups, homeowner associations, developers, and the general public
- Prepares documents and supporting materials for public meetings, including but not limited to maps, diagrams, handouts, agendas, and PowerPoint presentations
- Provides excellent customer service to citizens, public officials, and development community representatives regarding land use and zoning-related matters, development/redevelopment potential, and other administrative procedures
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Planner III (Urban Design) - Community Planning & Placemaking Section
- Assists Chief Planner by leading assigned projects and supervising other section team members, and tracking project goals and objectives, timelines, phasing, scheduling, milestones, tasks and deliverables
- Coordinates complex and high-profile community planning tasks for targeted growth areas, including public outreach, existing conditions analysis, visioning and design, regulatory updates, and infrastructure / service needs
- Manages scopes, schedules and deliverables, while coordinating with other team members, external collaborators, or partnering agencies
- Reviews proposed changes to the Comprehensive Plan and Code, and facilitates interdepartmental team meetings on such matters
