Position: Crime Analyst I

Starting pay
: $45,344/yr or $46,716/ yr with 3+ years of experience

Examines crime and incident data, including crime activity patterns, to identify trends for operational deployment, tactical intervention, and strategic planning, with duties that require direct exposure to confidential, sensitive, and/or graphic materials.

Minimum Requirements
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Must be able to comprehend and communicate fluently in verbal and written English.
  • U.S. Citizen or possess a current permanent resident card.
  • Clean criminal history; any arrest history will be individually evaluated.
  • No illegal drug usage within the past year. Other drug usage will be evaluated on a case by case basis.
  • Associate’s degree (A.A. or A.S.) in Criminal Justice, Statistical Analysis, Geographic Information System (GIS), Psychology, Information Technology or closely related field AND two (2) years’ related experience and/or training OR Bachelor’s degree (B.

    A. or B.S.) in Criminal Justice, Statistical Analysis, Geographic Information System (GIS), Psychology, Information Technology or closely related field.
  • If this posting indicates a degree is required, the following experience will apply in lieu of any degree as follows:
    • Two (2) years of direct experience for an Associate Degree
    • Four (4) years of direct experience for a Bachelor's Degree
  • Related experience to include: Investigations, analysis, behavioral profiling, and/or geographical information systems.
  • Must be able to successfully complete ANACAPA Training Course, Crime Analysis Applications Training Course, and State Certification of Crime Analysts within three (3) years of selection. Must be able to be FCIC/NCIC certified within one (1) year of employment. Must maintain certifications listed above once achieved.
  • Must successfully pass skills and abilities tests. Upon selection, must be able to pass a psychological evaluation.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret crime data to identify criminal activity patterns and trends. Chart criminal activity; prepare crime analysis worksheets; and produce/update computer generated maps on criminal activity based on chronological geographic factors.
  • Ability to produce daily/weekly analytical reports for dissemination to agency personnel, staff, other law enforcement agencies, and the public. Prepare and/or present results of analysis to the Executive Staff as part of the sworn labor allocation process.
  • Ability to collect and review crime data from incident reports. Verify information in reports.
  • Ability to extract and compile crime data statistics. Generate descriptive crime statistics. Profile suspects and vehicles associated with crime trends. Run NCIC/FCIC inquiries. Provide statistics and related intelligence to agency personnel and outside agencies.
  • Ability to determine when to assign crime bulletins and identifies information to release to citizens in areas with increased criminal activity.
  • Ability to develop and present instructional presentations on crime analysis related matters for local universities, colleges, and other governmental agencies.
  • Ability to perform various administrative duties. Maintain control of and follows up on incoming correspondence/action documents. Organize, summarize, and assemble requested information. Complete, update, and submit required reports, documents, and forms (e.g., subpoenas, affidavits, and crime bulletins). Maintain confidential files.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures and governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to present information to and respond to questions and complaints from management, outside agencies, businesses, and the public.
  • Must have the willingness and ability to speak in front of large groups of employees, high-ranking agency members, and community leaders.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain working relationships.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality.
  • Must possess advanced mathematical skills.
  • Ability to apply mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, frequency distribution, and correlation techniques.
