Job Description

Supervises and performs administrative, operational, technical firefighting and EMS activities. The unit of assignment may be that of Field Operations, Public Information, Training, Administration, Communications Center, or other work unit. Work is performed under the general direction of a Battalion Chief, Assistant Chief, Deputy Chief or Division Manager.

Representative Duties / Assignments
  • Plans, directs and coordinates the work of personnel assigned to the unit.
  • Supervises and evaluates personnel in emergency, non-emergency, and training settings.
  • Plans and coordinates day-to-day training, which may include multi-company training activities.
  • Involved in project management as required for special details.
  • Responds to emergencies, supervises and performs firefighting and EMS activities.
  • Responds to requests/complaints from citizens, members of other departments, and co-workers.
  • Manages and oversees the maintenance needs of each station.
  • Participates in focus groups involving a variety of issues.
  • Responsible for administrative functions, including station pre-plans, building inspections, street books, station maintenance, hose records, hydrant records, apparatus needs other than work orders for general maintenance, monthly station inspections and follow-up as needed, etc. (some of these apply to station captains only)
  • Assesses and evaluates assigned personnel for all shifts concerning administrative issues.
  • Develops programs to enhance career development.
  • Prepares or assists in preparing annual budget.
  • Develops and writes specifications for the purchasing of equipment.
  • Investigates on the job accidents and injuries.
  • Reviews workers compensation claims.
  • Acts in the position of Battalion Chief as assigned.
  • Participates in physical fitness activities to maintain physical conditioning.
  • Ensures the completion of station area activities.
  • Captain's responsibilities are not limited to the above-described responsibilities, but they shall accept additional responsibilities as prescribed by the Battalion Chief.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Two years as a bargaining unit Lieutenant as of the promotion process start date.
  • Paramedic Certification.
  • A valid Florida Driver's License.
  • Florida Certification as a Fire Officer II, or Fire Officer I certification attained prior to July 1, 2014.
  • Must possess 40 college credits in Fire Science, Emergency Medical Services, or related fields from an accredited college or university as listed in 22.7C.

  • Paramedic Certification.
  • NFA Incident Safety Officer qualification.
  • HAZMAT Tech Level I qualified.
  • Fire Instructor I Certification.
