Position Overview

The City is sponsoring eligible candidates through the Police Academy. This position prepares a non-certified applicant (Police Cadet) to receive the necessary training and education through the Law Enforcement Basic Recruit Training (Police Academy) to become a prospective Police Officer. Employees in this classification perform practical skills and simulated activities that complement classroom instruction, regulated by Florida statutes and a highly structured, disciplined program.

Upon successful completion of the Basic Training Program, a cadet is eligible to take the Florida Department of Law Enforcement State Officer Certification exam. The position is under the general supervision of the Chief of Police or designee and includes performing other duties as assigned.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Attend all required courses at the Police Academy.
  • While at the Academy, perform any related duties the Academy deems necessary.
  • Complete the Florida Law Enforcement Basic Recruit training in order to become eligible for the certification exam.
  • Perform routine office functions such as filing, faxing, answering phones, and copying.
  • Perform related duties as directed.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum age of 19 years.
  • Must be a United States citizen at the time of application.
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent; evaluation of foreign diploma may be required.
  • Must not have been convicted of any felony or a misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement as an adult; must have good moral character as determined by a background investigation.
  • If ever arrested, must submit an official court disposition with the application.
  • Must successfully pass the Basic Abilities Test (CJBAT or FBAT). If not completed by the application date, the test must be scheduled by the interview date. The test is not required for non‑certified applicants with an associate’s degree or higher.
  • Must successfully pass the Physical Agility Test. The test must be completed at Broward College Institute of Public Safety Testing Center. If not completed by the application date, it must be scheduled by the interview date. Contact  or  for more information.
  • Proof of education level (copy of high school diploma, GED, or college transcript) must be uploaded in PDF format.
  • Any required licenses or certifications for the position must be submitted; otherwise the application will be incomplete.
  • Drug and alcohol testing is conducted per City policy and federal, state, and local requirements.
