Overview
Orange County Government seeks highly motivated candidates for the position of Non‑Certified Correctional Officer Trainee. This paid Trainee/Academy Recruit Position is for applicants who are not certified as a Correctional Officer in the State of Florida. Successful candidates will be sponsored to attend Basic Corrections Academy to become a Certified Correctional Officer.
Job DescriptionParticipates in training activities associated with preparing for the Florida State certification examination for Correctional Officer.
Representative Duties- Attends and participates in the Corrections Academy at Valencia College Criminal Justice Institute.
- Complete a 12‑week comprehensive course covering requirements to become a certified correctional officer.
- Perform physical training activities such as running, climbing, crawling, push‑ups, sit‑ups, and vertical leap associated with correctional officer training.
- Attend, participate, and complete Florida Department of Law Enforcement Standards Certification classes.
- When not engaged in academy courses, perform various duties under the supervision of a Correctional Corporal or Sergeant.
- Work all shifts, weekends, and holidays; hours may be 8, 10, or 12 depending on assignment.
- May perform supervised Correctional Officer duties with inmate contact.
- Other duties as assigned.
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Valid Florida driver’s license within thirty days of hire.
- Complete correctional officer certification within six months of starting an academy.
- At least 19 years of age and a United States citizen.
- No felony or misdemeanor convictions involving moral turpitude.

Pay Grade: 552 – $28.25 to $33.92 per hour.
FLSA Status:
Non‑Exempt. Placement based on education and experience.

- No involvement in illegal sale or trafficking of controlled substances.
- No recent job discharge within the last year.
- No written reprimand or greater within six months of application.
- No five or more traffic convictions, except parking tickets.
All selected applicants must successfully complete a Level 2 background check, including polygraph, psychological assessment, and fingerprints.
Employees must conceal tattoos or body ornamentation that are offensive or prohibited per department policy. Dental ornamentation is restricted as described.
