Position Summary

The Environmental Coordinator works closely with City personnel, other government and regulatory officials, industrial/commercial customers, residential customers, and site development contractors to ensure compliance with environmental regulations. Develops and implements comprehensive compliance programs and provides technical support related to water, wastewater, stormwater, industrial pretreatment, cross connection control, water conservation, reclaimed water, best management practices, regulatory compliance, safety, emergency management and other related issues.

Work is largely independent and requires a high level of critical thinking, planning, and organizational skills. Responsibilities may occasionally include management and oversight of Environmental Compliance support staff for project and program work, when required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Serves as the primary point of contact for the City’s Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) permit, ensuring compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations
  • Prepares and submits permit applications, permit renewals, annual reports, compliance documents, and other required regulatory reports and records
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates programs, procedures, standard operating procedures, and guidelines necessary to maintain compliance with the City’s regulatory requirements
  • Conducts and coordinates public education, outreach, and training programs with City staff and the regulated community to promote compliance and environmental stewardship
  • Responds to and investigates reports of illicit discharge, illegal dumping, and improper disposal, and other activities that may impact the MS4
  • Responds to citizen questions and concerns about the stormwater program, water quality, and drainage issues, and related environmental matters
  • Performs and coordinates compliance reviews, inspections, audits, and evaluations. Prepares related documentation and works with parties to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Prepares technical reports, correspondence, presentations, records, and other documentation necessary for program administration and regulatory compliance
  • Participates in regulatory workshops, conferences, professional organizations, public meetings, and project-related activities
  • Provides primary support and backup assistance for the Industrial Pretreatment Program and coordinates compliance activities with Utilities Operations and Utilities Maintenance personnel as needed
  • Serves as the lead party responsible for coordinating the development and implementation of effective and relevant safety and emergency management training programs for the Environmental Compliance Division.
  • Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule that may involve activities performed outside of normal working hours.
  • Performs other tasks and duties assigned.

  • Ability to prioritize work, plan, organize, make logical conclusions, and initiate appropriate actions.
  • Ability to deal tactfully with customers, regulatory agencies, and other City staff.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in use of PC and Microsoft Office suite, especially Word, Excel, and Access.
  • Must have excellent communication skills. Must be able to write clearly and legibly.
  • Strong public speaking abilities and background.
