Law Enforcement Trainee – Police Officer
The position is for candidates who meet education requirements but lack experience, with an opportunity for military veterans to become sworn officers after completing the academy. Law Enforcement Trainees are sworn in as officers upon academy completion and receive a base salary of $77,516.00 and full benefit coverage.
Responsibilities- Enforce vehicle parking and operating laws; issue citations.
- Assist officers with investigations of wanted and missing persons, stolen property, and prepare reports.
- Direct traffic and assist pedestrians at intersections.
- Prepare daily and periodic written reports and departmental forms; maintain logs; complete speed reports.
- Assist with natural disaster preparedness and emergency response; direct evacuation traffic.
- Assist with animal control services.
- Attend academy, training sessions, and seminars as directed.
Minimum Education Requirement:
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college.
- Or two years of active duty in the Military and at least 60 accredited college credit hours in lieu of a bachelor’s degree. Other military, work, and education experience may be considered.
- Candidates must sign a contract committing to complete a bachelor’s degree within five years of hire.
- Meet Florida state law enforcement requirements and standards set by Broward College Institute of Public Safety and the City of Coral Springs.
- Minimum age of 21 years and U.S. citizenship.
- Valid Florida driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
- Full tuition, books, and class materials paid while attending Broward College Institute of Public Safety Police Academy.
- Insurance benefits while attending the academy.
- Upon academy completion, sworn in as a Police Officer, receive Step 1 pay and begin field training.
- CJBAT (Criminal Justice Basic Abilities Test) – minimum passing score within last four years (not required for those with an associate’s degree or higher, active military service, or Florida certification).
- Basic Motor Skills Test – passing score within last six months.
- Swim Test – passing score, does not expire.
- Copy of birth certificate.
- Copy of high‑school diploma or GED (if not applying with a bachelor’s degree).
- Copy of driver’s license with current name and address.
- Copy of Social Security card with current name.
- Copy of military release form – DD214 (if applicable).
- Official sealed/stamped college transcripts.
