The Solid Waste Management Division is seeking a highly qualified individual to fill the position of "Environmental Coordinator - (Landfill Compliance and Household Hazardous Waste)".

Performs highly responsible professional work in environmental compliance and management related to solid waste, regulated waste, and hazardous waste management. The incumbent serves a key role in ensuring the Solid Waste Management Division's compliance with applicable environmental laws, regulations, and permit requirements governing landfill operations and household hazardous waste management. Coordinates environmental compliance initiatives, studies, and research that support regulatory compliance and the Division's operational objectives.

Work is performed independently and is subject to review by the Division’s Chief Engineer for conformance with federal, state, and local regulations, contract obligations, and the Board of County Commissioners’ objectives.

• Supervises a team of Environmental Specialists and their assigned activities.
• Periodically reviews landfills and transfer stations status for regulatory compliance and directs whatever actions are necessary to meet compliance.
• Manages the County’s Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Program that includes contractor-operated Permanent Collection Centers and Community Collection Events, Electronic Waste Contract, and the removal of Universal Waste by multiple contractors.
• Develops and maintains standard operating procedures related to environmental compliance.
• Reviews documentation and responds to queries, complaints, or investigative requests from the public and local, state, or federal agencies.
• Coordinates with operations staff to ensure accurate reports and compliance submittals.
• Directs and participates in studies, surveys, and specialized research.
• Manages revisions, scopes of work, and databases for multiple contracts, and conducts technical contract reviews.
• Accurately tracks revenue and expenditures for contracts; and analyzes and reconciles accounts to identify discrepancies.
• Trains new staff in proper procedures and techniques.
• Participates in the Division’s Safety Committee meetings and initiatives.
• Responds to environmental emergencies, including fires, hazardous material spills, unauthorized discharges, and other incidents with potential environmental impacts, serving as the Division's environmental subject matter expert by providing technical guidance, coordinating environmental assessments, supporting regulatory notifications, and recommending appropriate corrective actions to ensure compliance with applicable environmental regulations.
• Serves as the backup after-hours environmental response coordinator by monitoring and responding to alarms and emergencies involving environmental control systems, including SCADA systems, leachate storage tanks, pump stations, and related infrastructure.
