Overview

Nemours Children's Health is seeking a Laboratory Operations Manager to join our laboratory team in Orlando, Florida.

Located in Orlando, Fla., Nemours Children's Hospital is the newest addition to the Nemours integrated healthcare system. Our 130-bed pediatric hospital also features the area's only 24-hour Emergency Department designed just for kids as well as outpatient pediatric clinics including several specialties previously unavailable in the region. In keeping with our goal of bringing Nemours care into the communities we serve, we also provide specialty outpatient care in several clinics located throughout.

Laboratory Operations Manager will provide oversight of the clinical pathology aspects of daily operations, quality management, staffing, and strategic direction in partnership with Nemours Children's Hospital, Florida's Chair of Pathology and laboratory leadership. In this role, the manager will serve at an enterprise level, in partnership with laboratory operations managers at Nemours Children's Hospital, Delaware to provide subject matter expertise and systemness across all aspects of laboratory medicine.

This position will require periodic travel to other Nemours locations, to include Nemours Children's Hospital, Delaware. Anticipated travel 2-4 times per year.

Responsibilities
  • Working with others, oversees daily operations, including: a) Evaluating problems, working conditions, etc. and correcting changing as necessary to improve continuously the quality of laboratory testing; b) Handling complaints and/or problems in order to make them opportunities for improvement; c) Implementing changes and ideas to improve systematically the delivery of laboratory service; d)
    Evaluating and assigning staffing; e) Evaluating and assigning workload.
  • As needed, performs functions assigned to other department supervisory personnel, such as making/adjusting staffing schedule, evaluating technical problems, reviewing results, evaluating quality control, etc.
  • Establishes and/or reviews department policies, communicates these to department staff members and ensures implementation.
  • Reviews accreditation requirements, procedures, compliance, and maintains knowledge of changes in these.
  • Assists supervisors, senior medical technologists and others with section staffing, section technical and administrative problems and section procedures.
  • Evaluates staffing needs and coordinates departmental requests for personnel as needed. With supervisors and/or senior medical technologists, reviews staff training program to ensure competency of all laboratory personnel.
  • Coordinates the ongoing evaluation of department equipment needs and requests appropriate equipment as needed. Reviews equipment needs with departmental staff as needed as well as other hospital administrators as appropriate.
  • Meets with other staff both to evaluate appropriateness of laboratory services, needs for change, and implements or suggests changes as appropriate. Managing and working with section supervisors, senior technologists and others, helps to manage section activities, especially related to long term goals, such as capital equipment planning and coordination of new programs within the designated laboratory section(s). Helps implement new programs including those requiring updated technology not previously available.
  • Utilizes improvement methodologies (PDSA, process mapping, etc.), to help guide improvements in quality, safety and staff education.
  • Works with designated section leaders on regulatory activities and compliance.
  • In concert with medical director and laboratory administration, establishes operational performance measurements and monitors trends in key performance indicators to enhance laboratory services. Will design and implement appropriate data collection methods.
  • Helps in guiding investigations of events of interest, facilitates apparent, cause, root cause, and common cause analyses. Helps direct FMEAs, SSE evaluations (RCAs, DCAs, ACAs) as needed to help improve / redesign processes, embed behavioral expectations for safety.
  • Is cognizant of regulatory and compliance requirements around safety, quality and education in the clinical laboratory and helps guide these processes.
Qualifications
  • B. S. in Medical Technology (B.S.M.T. or equivalent, e.g., HHS examination or ability to meet CLIA qualifications for High complexity laboratory testing) required.
  • Minimum of five (5)+ years experience required.
  • Prior experience in laboratory leadership positions - e.g., supervisor, manager - is required.
  • Florida Supervisor License required upon hire.
  • Nationally recognized certification (i.e. ASCP, AMT) is preferred.
