Overview

Position Summary:

Demonstrates through clinical practice a clear understanding of sterile techniques and has a working knowledge of the specialized instrumentation and equipment required for a variety of specialty procedures. Demonstrates competency to operate all specialty instruments, supplies, and equipment to at least one tertiary specialty service.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain an orderly surgical field and consistently pass instruments and supplies quickly and efficiently to the surgeon.
  • Able to anticipate and prioritize the needs of the various steps associated with the procedure.
  • Take part in sponge, needle and instruments counts as dictated by the procedure.
  • Maintain the surgical specimen in a manner which identifies and preserves them for pathology evaluation.
  • Assist in ordering and stocking of specialty supplies under the direction of management staff and departmental guidelines.
  • In collaboration with a Registered Nurse, serve as a technical subject matter expert for at least one tertiary specialty.
  • Provide scrub services for major procedures in at least 2 surgical specialties (independently with high physician satisfaction).
  • Prepare and conduct technical performance-oriented training related to specialty service.
  • Serve as a preceptor to perioperative personnel rotating through the scrub roles associated with their primary specialty(s) and/or second circulates on major tertiary procedures.
  • Collaborates with surgeons and proactively addresses case needs when performing duties in either the scrub or second circulator roles.
  • In collaboration with the clinical leadership, assists in workflow process improvement activities, contributes to organizational effectiveness, and demonstrates career growth and development.
  • Transports and delivers items, equipment, and medications (excluding controlled substances and IV chemotherapy drugs) throughout the facility.
Qualifications

Education/Training: High school graduate or equivalent.

  • Surgical Technology training program; or
  • Orlando Health training program

Licensure/Certification: Maintains current BLS/Healthcare Provider certification.

Experience: Four (4) years of Surgical Tech experience. (CST and two (2) years of Surgical Tech experience may substitute for the required experience).
