Pediatric Audiology Externship: Hands-On Multisite Training

Overview

Nemours Children's Health in Orlando, Florida is seeking an extern for the  academic year. This externship offers motivated candidates an opportunity to advance into confident pediatric audiologists by working alongside pediatric audiologists across several Nemours Children's Health locations. Candidates with at least one pediatric placement or practicum and a foundational background in pediatric assessment are preferred.

• Conduct comprehensive hearing evaluations using Visual Reinforcement Audiometry (VRA), Conditioned Play Audiometry (CPA), conventional audiometry, and auditory brainstem response (A ) in sleep‑deprived and sedated formats.
• Participate in cochlear implant evaluations, activations, and mapping; manage pediatric hearing aid application and verification for traditional and CROS systems and bone‑anchored hearing systems (BAHS) including nonsurgical and surgical options.
• Perform vestibular assessments and other evoked potential evaluations.
• Observe and shadow multidisciplinary teams in cleft/craniofacial and microtia clinics, collaborating with otolaryngologists, plastic surgeons, advanced practice providers, social workers, psychologists, and auditory verbal therapists.

• Basic audiometry (air, bone, and speech testing)
• Immittance measurements and otoacoustic emissions (OAE)
• Basic A  skills
• Hearing aid fitting, verification, and troubleshooting
• Effective report writing skills

• Master pediatric hearing evaluations for patients age birth to 18 years, including VRA, CPA, and conventional audiometry.
• Perform comprehensive immittance and OAE measures.
• Analyze electrophysiologic testing results.
• Select, verify, and fit pediatric hearing aids.
• Understand cochlear implant candidacy requirements, evaluation, and programming.
• Develop appropriate counseling and communication skills.
• Maintain proficient report writing and organizational skills.

• Daily pediatric evaluations (infant/toddler and school‑age).
• Regular tympanometry, acoustic reflexes, auditory processing evaluations, OAE, and vestibular assessments.
• Frequent hearing aid dispensing, selection, fitting, and audio logic rehabilitation (group or individualized).
• Consistent cochlear implant evaluations and rehabilitation.
• Occasional hearing screenings and evoked potential assessments.
• Rare opportunities for intra‑operative monitoring cases, tinnitus assessments, and vestibular rehabilitation.

• Participate in research projects conducted by the clinic.
• Attend manufacturer trainings and educational conferences.
• Travel to satellite centers, including a downtown Orlando clinic, up to 1-2 times per week.
