Director of Development Position SummaryThe Director of Development provides strategic leadership for all fundraising, community engagement, and marketing/communications initiatives to advance the organization’s mission. This role oversees private sector giving, major gifts, corporate sponsor ships, special events, and direct mail campaigns.
The Director is accountable for achieving annual revenue goals, increasing donor retention, expanding media presence, and strengthening community visibility. Working closely with the President/CEO, Board of Directors, and key partners, this position builds meaningful donor relationships while leading and developing a high-performing team.
The ideal candidate is a strategic, results-driven fundraising leader with a strong track record of revenue growth and a passion for community impact.
Key Responsibilities Revenue & Fundraising Strategy- Meet or exceed annual revenue goals across multiple fundraising categories, including:
- Private sector revenue
- Major gifts
- Fundraising events
- Direct mail campaigns
- Increase donor retention by a minimum of 10% year-over-year.
- Maintain a 3:1 (or better) return on investment for fundraising events.
- Develop, implement, and manage an annual written fundraising and event plan with clear timelines, measurable goals, deadlines, and assigned responsibilities.
- Create and monitor the department’s annual budget, adjusting as necessary.
- Develop and execute a comprehensive moves management plan, including creative donor cultivation and stewardship strategies.
- Establish and track donor retention metrics, including baseline data and ongoing reporting.
- Develop and monitor departmental Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to measure effectiveness and drive continuous improvement.
- Identify, recruit, and cultivate corporate sponsors for fundraising events.
- Identify and qualify prospective donors from existing and new donor pools.
- Develop individualized donor goals based on giving history, capacity, and propensity.
- Collaborate with the Development team to implement and execute a stewardship matrix.
- Meet or exceed stewardship calendar benchmarks and ensure timely donor recognition.
- Lead campus tours for prospective and current donors to enhance engagement and understanding of the mission.
- Partner with the Development Coordinator to ensure cost-effective, professional execution of events.
- Support and coordinate major donor events and fundraising initiatives.
- Manage the annual direct mail plan and calendar in collaboration with consultants and vendors to ensure timely production.
- Grow social media audience and engagement reach.
- Increase earned media opportunities and public awareness of the organization’s mission.
- Serve as a media representative, including conducting interviews and preparing the President/CEO for media appearances.
- Provide effective leadership to Development, Community Engagement, and Marketing/Communications teams by setting clear expectations and fostering collaboration.
- Serve as staff liaison to select volunteer committees.
- Actively participate in Executive Committee and Board of Directors meetings by preparing reports, providing updates, and engaging board members in fundraising efforts.
- Ensure accountability for all Development Department KPIs.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university (preferred).
- Minimum of five (5) years of fundraising experience, including staff management.
- Experience in Social Services Fundraising And Media Relations Preferred.
- Commitment to ethical fundraising standards and compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
- Demonstrated commitment to continuing education and staying current on fundraising best practices.
- Proficiency in donor database systems and Microsoft Office applications.
- Experience in major gifts, corporate fundraising, proposal writing, event sponsor ships, and volunteer committee leadership.
- Commitment to a Housing Focused/Housing First approach to ending homelessness.
- Fundraising: 5 years (required)
- Microsoft Office: 1 year (required)
- High emotional intelligence with the ability to build strong, positive stakeholder relationships.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with board members, high-net-worth donors, corporate sponsors, volunteers, and cross-functional teams.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
