Job Description

Summary:

Oncology Urgent Care Advanced Practice Provider (APP)—which includes Nurse Practitioners (NPs) and Physician Assistants (PAs)—is responsible for the rapid assessment and management of acute complications in cancer patients. This role aims to provide specialized care for treatment‑related toxicities and disease‑related emergencies, thereby reducing unnecessary Emergency Department (ED) visits and hospital admissions.

40 hrs/week Mon‑Fri (Hours TBD)

Advent Health Orlando Cancer Institute, 2501 N Orange Ave, Orlando, FL

Core Clinical Responsibilities
  • Acute Symptom Management
    :
    Conduct episodic health histories and physical assessments for patients experiencing urgent issues such as, but not limited to, fever, dehydration, respiratory distress, or changes in mental status.
  • Toxicity Recognition
    :
    Identify and manage complex side effects of chemotherapy and immunotherapy, including hypersensitivity reactions and immunotherapy‑related toxicities.
  • Intervention & Procedures
    :
    Initiate diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, such as ordering/interpreting lab and radiology data, and performing procedures like bone marrow biopsies or vascular access device management.
  • Emergency Response
    :
    Serve as part of emergency response teams (e.g., ACLS teams) within infusion centers to manage life‑threatening situations.
  • Triage
    :
    Receive and triage patient phone calls to determine the necessary level of care and elevate complex issues to physicians when appropriate.
Collaboration & Care Coordination
  • Interdisciplinary Partnership
    :
    Work closely with medical oncologists, surgeons, and palliative care teams to ensure continuity of care throughout the patient’s treatment trajectory.
  • Patient Education
    :
    Educate patients and their families on symptom management, treatment plans, and when to seek urgent versus routine care.
  • Continuity of Care
    :
    Facilitate hospital admissions or discharges and coordinate follow‑up care after an urgent visit.
Qualifications & Skills
  • Education & Licensure
    :
    Master's degree from an accredited

    Physician Assistantor Nurse Practitioner program, with current state licensure and DEA registration.
  • Certifications
    : ACLS and BLS certifications are required; specialized oncology certifications (e.g., AOCNP) are preferred.
  • Clinical Expertise
    :
    Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to practice with a high degree of autonomy in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Required Experience
    :
    Minimum 3-5 years of experience in Advanced Practice role in Hematology/Oncology. Minimum 1-3 years in Urgent Care/Emergency Care or Critical Care in an Advanced Practice role.
