Job Description

PCU Medical is a 39 beds - Unit Palliative/ Supportive Care

  • Great unit to learn and grow as there is an opportunity to care for a diverse patient population
  • Potential to train as a Charge Nurse or Preceptor down the road if interested (based on performance)
  • With staffing ratios of 5 patients per nurse, our medical progressive care unit (PCU) runs a team nursing model that provides intermediate-level care for patients who require more monitoring and intervention than those in a regular medical-surgical unit, but not as intensive as those in an intensive care unit (ICU).
  • Our patients typically have conditions such as heart failure, diabetes, respiratory distress, sepsis, or other complex medical needs. Our unit is staffed with registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, respiratory therapists, other members of the interprofessional team to assist with the management, and monitoring of critically ill patients.
  • Our PCU offers specialized equipment and technologies, including cardiac monitoring and telemetry, non-invasive ventilation, pulse oximetry, and specialized IV pumps. Our staff is also trained in the use of advanced care techniques, such as wound care, medications, and nutritional support.
  • Our medical PCU team works closely with physicians, rehabilitation specialists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to provide an individualized care plan for each patient. The goal of our PCU is to improve patient outcomes, reduce complications, and prevent ICU admissions.
  • Our medical PCU uses Virtual Nursing support to assist our bedside nurses with admissions, discharges, safety rounding, patient education, virtual safety companions, and post discharge support for our patients.
  • Providing quality care is our priority so in addition to our Registered Nurses and Virtual Nursing Team
Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments to evaluate the physiological, psychological, developmental, sociocultural, spiritual, and lifestyle factors of patients. Develop and implement individualized care plans based on patient needs and standards of care, regularly evaluating and revising these plans as necessary. Administer medications and treatments accurately and safely, following physician orders and hospital protocols, and monitor for adverse reactions.
  • Educate patients and families about health conditions, treatments, medications, and self-care strategies to promote understanding and compliance.
  • Collaborate with medical staff and ancillary departments to coordinate and optimize patient care, ensuring effective communication and teamwork.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient information, care activities, interventions, and outcomes in the medical record.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Organizational and multi-tasking skills
  • Knowledge of nursing care methods and procedures
  • Ability to work as a Team player within a unit
  • Effective verbal and oral communication and problem-solving skills
  • EKG (based on patient ; see document EKG and Advanced Life Support Requirements)
  • Must be fluent in English (read, verbal and written skills)
  • Basic computer skills – must be able to navigate Microsoft windows based programs
  • Must be able to use a high level of abstract reasoning to assess patient, evaluate interventions, and revise plan of care according to patient outcomes.
Education
  • Associate's of Nursing [Required]
  • Bachelor's of Nursing [Preferred]
Work Experience
  • 1+ acute care hospital setting [Preferred]
Licenses and Certifications
  • Registered Nurse (RN) [Required]
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support Cert (ACLS) [Required]
  • Basic Life Support - CPR Cert (BLS) [Required]
