Job Summary
The Nurse Resident administers patient care in an area within a hospital or inpatient/observation setting, where acute care patients receive active treatment for injuries, illnesses, medical conditions, or post intervention with assessment.
Position SummaryThis position is with the Neuro Med/Surg floor, the area's only Level IV Epilepsy Center. It is a fast paced, clinically intense unit that specializes in the care of many conditions of the brain, such as stroke, Parkinson's, MS, epilepsy, head injuries, and cognitive disorders.
EligibilityThis position is intended for licensed registered nurses with less than one year of experience. Applicants must hold an active Florida or compact multistate RN license to be considered.
Residency ProgramThe Orlando Health Registered Nurse Residency Program is accredited by the ANCC Practice Transition Accreditation Program. The Nurse Residency is a 12‑month ANCC accredited program that supports any RN with under one year of experience through structured training, preceptorship, monthly classes, and simulation to transition into independent practice.

- Education: Nursing school graduate.
- Meets all mandatory, developmental, and performance competency requirements for Orlando Health and the unit/department.
- Licensure/Certification: Registered Nurse in Florida or valid Nurse Licensure Compact multistate RN license.
- Maintains current BLS/Healthcare Provider certification.
- ACLS, NRP, PALS, TNCC required for certain areas.
- Administers bedside patient care under the supervision of a preceptor, leader, and/or charge nurse.
- Assesses patients’ needs and develops/revises individualized plans of care based on their needs and responses.
- Evaluates patients’ progress toward attaining expected outcomes.
- Respects diversity by building respectful relationships with all team members and customers.
- Functions as an advocate for patients and their families.
- Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on the assigned unit.
- Serves as a preceptor, charge nurse, unit educator, and/or nurse clinician.
- Communicates and collaborates with medical staff and the interdisciplinary team to effectively plan and manage the unit.
- Serves as a role model for staff and supports the hospital and nursing department’s goals and strategies.
- Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development over the life span, interprets necessary information to identify each patient’s requirements relative to their age‑specific needs.
- Coordinates patient care for a defined group and delegates tasks to team members.
- Documents patient care in a knowledgeable, skillful, and consistent manner, meeting all required and regulatory standards.
- Demonstrates competency in nursing skills and the use of patient care/unit equipment as defined by unit/department-specific requisite skills.
- Prioritizes patient care in accordance with Evidence‑Based Practice Standards of Care.
- Practices effective problem identification and resolution.
- Delegates tasks and duties to healthcare team members in accordance with the patient’s needs and team member’s capabilities.
- Communicates appropriate information regarding patient condition or unit concerns to other team members.
- Demonstrates caring practices by providing a compassionate and therapeutic environment for patients and their families.
- Demonstrates awareness of legal issues and patients’ rights.
- Collaborates with the education department and nursing leadership to transition and support new team members and/or students.
- Maintains reasonable attendance in line with Orlando Health policies, ADA, FMLA, and other standards.
- Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.
- Contributes to the knowledge and skills of others, and continuously improves the quality of healthcare practice and organizational outcomes.
- Participates in and may lead unit level and/or organizational level committees focused on nursing practice and performance improvement.
- Participates in departmental and organizational peer review, mentoring, and coaching regarding professional practice or role performance.
- Practices efficient use of supplies and maintains a clean, safe, and organized work area.
- Attends staff development in‑services, department meetings, and nursing committee meetings.
- Partners with nursing leadership to identify professional development needs.
- Assumes responsibility for own professional development and continuing education.
- Actively participates in and attends the Nurse Residency Program as appropriate to the role.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
