Under the supervision of the physician— according to established practice guidelines and utilizing evidence‑based clinical practice standards—provides inpatient management, consultation, and co‑management of medical and surgical patients.

Responsibilities
  • Assesses the physical and psychosocial status of patients by means of interview, health history, physical examination, and diagnostic studies, and recognizes deviations from the normal. From this, develops a diagnosis, and works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team to formulate and implement the treatment plan.
  • Performs complex diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, as credentialed, in diagnosing medical and surgical problems and prescribing necessary treatment and services for quality patient care.
  • Assists in teaching students, residents, and interns in complex techniques and procedures.
  • Implements appropriate management based on laboratory results, physical assessment, routine diagnostic and follow‑up studies, therapeutic measures, admission and discharge care in accordance with evidence‑based medicine.
  • Initiates appropriate actions to facilitate the implementation of therapeutic plans that are consistent with the continuing healthcare needs of patients.
  • Writes or dictates patient progress notes, discharge summaries, and clinical resumes that are concise throughout.
  • Prescribes medication.
  • Performs patient education and maintains provision of preventive health services.
  • Conducts or participates in multidisciplinary rounds.
  • Works with supervising physician to determine and place appropriate specialty consultations.
  • Participates in quality initiatives to ensure consistent attainment of key quality indicators.
  • Performs advanced cardiac life support. In medical emergencies, will act on behalf of the supervising medical staff member to maintain life support until a licensed physician arrives to manage the patient.
