You in This Role:
As the Director of Quality, you will build and lead Unusual Machines' quality function from the ground up. This is a foundational leadership role responsible for establishing quality systems, processes, and teams across multiple facilities in a fast-growing, electronics-focused manufacturing environment.
You'll be accountable for ensuring the quality of products coming into and leaving our facilities, while designing scalable systems that support growth, compliance, and operational excellence. This role requires someone who is comfortable operating in ambiguity, setting direction where none exists today, and partnering closely across Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Engineering, and Operations.
A Day in the Life- Own and oversee all incoming and outgoing quality across facilities
- Design and implement quality systems and workflows from receipt of materials through shipment of finished goods
- Establish consistent quality processes across warehouses, factories, and production sites
- Lead and direct Incoming Quality personnel and quality resources across locations
- Partner closely with Supply Chain on incoming material quality and supplier issues
- Collaborate with Manufacturing on outgoing product quality and yield performance
- Advise on in-line quality processes and improvements (without direct ownership of in-line inspection)
- Define how quality data is captured, tracked, and reported using MES or other quality systems
- Act as the central point of contact for quality across the organization
- Build and launch a company-wide Quality Management System (QMS)
- Establish quality standards, procedures, and documentation across facilities
- Hire, develop, and lead the Quality team
- Define inspection criteria, acceptance standards, and escalation paths
- Create processes for supplier quality, incoming inspection, and outgoing product quality
- Develop yield analysis, root cause analysis, and corrective action processes
- Partner with Engineering and Manufacturing to support continuous improvement
- Prepare the organization for future compliance, certifications, and audits (ISO, TQM, Six Sigma-aligned practices)
- Create reporting and KPIs to measure product quality and system effectiveness
Required:
- Senior-level experience in Quality leadership within manufacturing or electronics environments
- Proven experience building a quality program or department from the ground up
- Strong understanding of quality systems, process control, and continuous improvement
- Experience managing and scaling teams in startup or high-growth environments
- Ability to influence cross-functional partners without direct authority
- Hands-on mindset with the ability to move between strategy and execution
Preferred:
- Experience in aerospace, government, or defense-adjacent industries
- Familiarity with ISO standards, TQM, and/or Six Sigma methodologies
- Experience supporting electronics manufacturing environments
- Experience working with MES or digital quality systems
