Position: UTILITIES TECHNICIAN I (WASTEWATER)

Overview

Performs a variety of routine semi‑skilled and skilled work in the maintenance and repair of wastewater lift stations and collection systems. Works under the general direction of the Public Works Director, or assigned designee. This position is considered an emergency/disaster position. During emergency conditions, all City employees are automatically considered emergency service workers and may be called to work in the event of a disaster, such as a hurricane, or other emergency situation, which requires that the employee be ready, willing, and able to report to work during emergencies and/or disasters of any kind, notwithstanding any other commitments the employee may have and be able to perform emergency services duties as assigned.

Responsibilities
  • Assists Wastewater Technician II in conducting daily lift station checks and transmission maintenance.
  • Removes, repairs and installs pump motors, valves, and sewer laterals.
  • Maintains, locates, repairs, and inspects wastewater collection and transmission facilities.
  • Reads and interprets flow meters, flow gauges, and time clocks.
  • Cleans and TVs collection systems and storm drains.
  • Performs “locates” of utilities prior to excavation as required.
  • Maintains availability for “stand by” assignment for a week at a time or other pre‑determined schedule, and availability for return to work under City’s “call back” procedures.
  • Responds to customer concerns and resolves problems within the City’s sanitary collection system.
  • Ensures compliance with all local, state, and federal rules and regulations pertaining to the collection, transmission, testing, and disposal of domestic sewage.
  • Sweeps and cleans work areas.
  • Completes forms, writes reports, and delivers messages.
  • Maintains stockroom for repair parts and supplies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent, with one or more years of experience in wastewater operations or any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Possess a valid Florida Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) certification, Class B, or obtain the CDL certification within six (6) months of employment.
  • Possess a valid Florida Water & Pollution Control Voluntary Class “C” Wastewater Collection Technician certificate, or obtain certification within two (2) years of employment.
  • Must also possess the National Incident Management System (NIMS) IS‑700 within 30 days of employment and the ICD‑100 within 90 days of employment. Additional required NIMS may be scheduled by supervisor.
  • Working knowledge of electronics, electrical systems, hydraulics, and pumping systems.
  • Some working knowledge of wastewater operations.
  • Ability to effectively interact with citizens/customers.
