Maintenance Technician II – Paint Care
The Facilities and Business Operations Department at the University of Central Florida seeks a Maintenance Technician II focused on painting. This role maintains campus facilities, ensuring a safe, functional, clean, efficient, and attractive environment. Responsibilities include troubleshooting, responding to service requests, and performing intermediate painting tasks while upholding safety and quality standards. The position requires on‑call duties as assigned.
Responsibilities- Perform painting and maintenance tasks for university buildings and equipment following university standards and safety guidelines.
- Apply paints, varnishes, stains, urethanes, enamels, and other finishes using brushes, rollers, spray equipment, and related tools.
- Prepare surfaces by removing old finishes, filling cracks and holes, and ensuring proper surface conditions before painting.
- Mix and match paint colors, including custom color matching for aged, discontinued, or faded finishes.
- Complete work orders accurately and timely, documenting labor hours, materials, and work performed.
- Identify and report maintenance, safety, sanitation, or repair concerns to supervisors.
- Assist central shops, contractors, campus departments, and university events with support and maintenance needs.
- Maintain inventory control, equipment security, and compliance with university, local, state, and federal regulations.
- Participate in required safety training and collaborate with other Facilities Operations teams as needed.
- Provide support during personnel shortages, emergencies, and other assigned maintenance duties.
Completion of an approved apprenticeship program for multiple trades and 3 years of relevant experience; or a high school diploma with 3 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience per Fla. Stat. 112.219(6).
Preferred Qualifications- Minimum of 3 years of experience in maintenance or related field, with focus on painting and building systems maintenance.
- Experience with interior and exterior painting, including surface preparation for proper paint adhesion and application techniques.
- Proven expertise in applying a wide range of paints, coatings, and finishes using various tools and equipment.
- Ability to mix and match colors, including working with discontinued or aged paint.
- Proficiency in carpentry to complete minor repairs prior to painting.
- Familiarity with spray equipment, rollers, brushes, and other painting tools.
- Knowledge of building systems maintenance, including plumbing, HVAC, electrical, or other general trades.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a customer--focused approach.
- Proficiency with standard office software, including Microsoft Office and work order systems such as Integrated Work Management System.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, adapting to changing priorities and emergencies.
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail for accurate record--keeping and inventory management.
- Ability to communicate in conversational English to work effectively with campus departments.
- Ability to work in outdoor conditions and varying climates and elevations.
UCF policy requires completion and passing of a physical exam for this position.
Special InstructionsSalary range: $17.64 to $22.00 per hour, negotiable based on qualifications, experience, and internal equity. Eligible for 5% Shift Differential Pay (minimum). Requires a valid Class E driver’s license and may involve campus travel. Respiratory and medical examinations and respirator training may be required. Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S.; no visa sponsorship is available.
