HVAC Technician

Under general direction, the purpose of the position is to perform skilled to advanced craft-mechanical air conditioning and HVAC systems work in various installation, maintenance and service tasks for the school district. Employees in this classification perform master level HVAC trades work with considerable independence and latitude in judgment concerning methods, materials, and priority of assigned work orders. Position is responsible for ensuring provision of fresh, environmentally safe, and dehumidified cooled or heated conditioned air for the assigned region of the district.

Essential functions as outlined herein are performed according to the functional area of assignment. Performs related work as directed.

Examples of essential functions include:

  • Responds to internal and external customers in a timely, accurate, courteous and empathetic manner representing OCPS in a positive light.
  • Performs skilled to advanced craft-mechanical air conditioning and HVAC trades work in various installation, repair, maintenance and service tasks for an assigned region of the school district.
  • Observes and tests malfunctioning systems to determine cause and appropriate corrective action; reads blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals as applicable to new installations or assigned service/repair orders.
  • Installs, maintains or services systems and components, to include setting and adjustment of pneumatic controls, replacement of defective components, and preventive maintenance and system monitoring.
  • Installs, services or replaces components including, but not limited to, compressors, window units, electric motors, bearings, shafts, fans, blowers, pumps, valves, piping, screens, filters, switches, sensors, lines, pressure gauges, drain pans, and valves.
  • Performs routine testing tasks in monitoring systems performance, i.e., starters and coils, relays and flow switches, voltage and amperage, pumping capacities, transformers, overloads, seals and bearings, equipment calibration.
  • Troubleshoots, adjusts, calibrates, repairs, and replaces electronic, electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic control systems and devices.
  • Performs preventive maintenance tasks according to established schedules, i.e., acid washing coils, replacing insulation and ductwork, replacing rusted components, checking belts for wear and lines for leaks, checking integrity of wiring.
  • Monitors systems functioning for the purpose of recognizing potential problems; addresses such accordingly.
  • Ensures compliance with and adherence to applicable codes, ordinances, building, and safety standards regarding HVAC systems installation, service and repair activities.
  • Fills out and maintains work orders and purchase orders for required materials, supplies and equipment; maintains daily activity logs and associated data records concerning the assigned HVAC systems.
  • Performs cleaning and maintenance of equipment, tools, materials, and vehicles utilized; ensures adherence to principles and practices of safe equipment use and operation.
  • Responds to emergency or critical incidents in order to confine, resolve, and/or prevent environmentally hazardous conditions.
  • Responsible for keeping up to date on current technology, as job appropriate, being used by OCPS. With the support of the district, attends training to ensure skill level in various technologies is at the level required to perform in current position.
  • Responsible for timely and accurate information they maintain as part of their job responsibilities.

Marginal functions include performing related duties as directed.

Minimum training and experience includes vocational/technical training in heating, air condition, refrigeration and ventilation; supplemented by minimum (5) years progressively knowledgeable and skilled trades work in the field, the majority of which shall be for a large commercial or industrial institution, with demonstrated equipment troubleshooting and diagnostic skills, and ability to read and interpret blueprints, architectural drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams and technical specifications;

or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Requires ability to obtain and maintain a valid commercial driver's license class "D"; requires training in refrigerant handling and recovery. Effective August 24, 2009, all new hires to this position must successfully complete the Industrial Physical Capability Screening (IPCS); previous incumbents holding this position without a break in service are not required to have this screening.
