Outside Plant Laborer

The Outside Plant Laborer supports the construction and installation of our fiber network, from conduit placement and trenching to aerial line construction and in-home cable installation. Reporting to the Mgr, Outside Plant Construction, this is a hands-on, field-based role within our Outside Plant Construction team, working alongside crews at manholes, handholes, and job sites across our service area. The laborer helps prepare and restore work sites, follows safety protocols closely, and pitches in wherever the crew needs support.

What the Role Involves:
- Completing the installation of conduit using trenching and pneumatic missile techniques, ensuring proper placement and secure installation
- Completing outside plant construction activities, including setting handholes, pulling fiber cable, aerial line construction, and restoring work sites
- Safely entering manholes to complete audits, cable placement, general maintenance, and other assigned tasks
- Installing fiber and Cat5e cables inside homes and businesses
- Safely operating and maintaining construction equipment and tools
- Preparing work sites by clearing debris, marking locations, and setting up necessary equipment
- Following safety regulations and practices to ensure a safe working environment for all team members
- Maintaining accurate records of work performed and materials used
- Contributing to various projects, including aiding other departments and team members, as directed

- A basic understanding of construction practices and a willingness to learn new techniques and equipment operation
- Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in construction
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Previous experience in outside plant construction or a related field
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting heavy objects, excavating with shovels, working in various weather conditions, in confined spaces, and standing for extended periods, and at various hours of the day/night
- Valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record
Nice to Have:
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification
- Experience operating directional boring or pneumatic missile (mole) equipment
- CDL or specialized vehicle endorsement
- Confined space entry certification
- Bilingual in English and Spanish
- Exposure to fiber splicing or termination
- Forklift or heavy equipment operation certification
Working Conditions:
- Availability to respond to after-hours callouts, and to work overtime, shifts, weekends, and holidays as required, remaining in service during outages until resolved
- Outdoor working environment with exposure to seasonal heat, cold, and other inclement weather conditions
- Driving a company-assigned vehicle to and from work sites in a safe and responsible manner during adverse weather conditions, heavy or light traffic, or at night
- Working at or near active roadways and vehicular traffic, requiring the use of traffic control devices, signage, and safety protocols to protect both team members and the public
