Job Description

This position provides social services to assist in the rehabilitation of juvenile law offenders in custody or on probation or parole. Incumbents make recommendations for actions involving formulation of rehabilitation plan and treatment of offender, including conditional release and education and employment stipulations.

Responsibilities
  • Initiate contact with youth, family, victims, and law enforcement when referrals are received.
  • Conduct home and school visits as an integral part of the information gathering process.
  • Obtain and review collateral information such as abuse and neglect history, education, mental health, substance use, gang‑related activity, and other pertinent information from other agencies.
  • Conduct and document FDJJ screenings to identify youth risk and needs and determine further evaluations.
  • Formulate case management strategies based on assessments and information to address specific needs.
  • Make service referrals and follow up on required actions.
  • Make supervision and treatment recommendations to the State Attorney and other judicial partners.
  • Complete screening instruments and reports used by the Department and courts.
  • Act as the DJJ representative during court hearings to support recommendations.
  • Prepare and maintain current social histories, court reports, referral letters, and related correspondence.
  • Testify at hearings when appropriate.
  • Prepare affidavits and petitions for violation of probation.
  • Request hearings when appropriate.
  • Complete risk and needs assessment using approved instrument(s).
  • Conduct face‑to‑face contacts in varied settings, including non‑traditional hours.
  • Maintain communication for all stages of youth and family involvement.
  • Assist youth with obtaining appropriate mental health, substance abuse evaluations and specialized testing.
  • Assist youth and family with school and after‑school enrollment; maintain school contact.
  • Provide crisis intervention and referrals.
  • Support youth in establishing personal goals and maintaining skills.
  • Discuss projected time frames for goal completion and termination of supervision.
  • Respond to concerns and risks with the unit supervisor and following departmental policies.
  • Participate in staffing when benchmarks or milestones are achieved.
  • Participate in transition and exit planning for release from residential programs.
  • Enter data into Juvenile Justice Information System (JJIS).
  • Upload required documents into JJIS.
  • Collaborate with community resources and provide input on program development.
  • Attend professional development trainings and meetings.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of case management practices and interviewing and counseling techniques.
  • Knowledge of computer programs.
  • Ability to make recommendations for processing and handling of delinquent youth.
  • Ability to develop case plans and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to determine work priorities.
  • Ability to establish effective relationships with community and judicial partners.
  • Ability to make independent decisions and conduct and document interviews.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Four years of experience working directly with adolescents in criminal justice, social services, or education.
  • A valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
  • Associate degree with two years’ experience in the relevant fields.
  • Certification as a State of Florida Juvenile Probation Officer, or experience with DJJ or related agency programs.
  • Certification in social sciences disciplines such as social work, sociology, psychology.

  • Must maintain CPR and First Aid Certifications.
  • Position may require non‑traditional hours, including weekends and evenings.
