Responsibilities

This position is responsible for securely transporting detainees between destinations and ensuring that the vehicles used for transportation activities are safe and properly maintained.

  • Conduct pre‑trip, during‑trip, and post‑trip inspections of all vehicles operated. Provide written Daily Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIR) at the end of each trip or shift and report any safety defects.
  • Ensure all permits and licenses are in order before beginning a trip and notify the Transportation Manager of any problems.
  • Ensure vehicles are equipped with all necessary safety equipment before initiating a trip and notify the Transportation Manager of any problems.
  • Complete all necessary paperwork and reports accurately and thoroughly, and submit them to the facility according to policies and procedures.
  • Secure detainees properly before leaving a facility and while in a vehicle, and obtain all required paperwork when transporting them.
  • Follow all safety measures at all times while transporting detainees, including compliance with federal, state, municipal and organizational laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Immediately contact safety authorities and facility management in the event of an accident and provide detailed information both verbally and in writing to requesting authorities.
  • Deliver vehicles for servicing and pick them up when ready.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent certification required. Possession of applicable state requisites for employment.
  • Must be at least twenty‑one (21) years of age.
  • A valid Class B or Class C Chauffeurs Driver’s License (CDL) with a Passenger (P) endorsement within 90 days of appointment.
  • Eighty (80) hours of verified and certified driver’s training from an approved company trainer as defined by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
  • Must possess a State Firearms License.
  • Must possess a State Security Guard License.
  • Must have completed an approved training program resulting in certification of satisfactory completion in Corrections, Law Enforcement, or Military.
  • Certification in Corrections, Law Enforcement, or Military.
  • A current driver’s license with no preventable accidents, suspensions for driving convictions, DWI or DUI, or more than two moving violations on any type of vehicle in the past three years.
  • Pass a company and Department of Transportation drug and alcohol test.
  • Ability to work overtime frequently.
  • Ability to travel extended periods with frequent overnight stays.
  • Ability to handle physical and mental stress associated with extended hours.
  • Must be able to regularly report to work without being late.
  • Ability to be physically alert on any assigned shift.
  • Ability to work up to sixteen (16) hours within a rolling 24‑hour period.
  • Must be mature, flexible, and able to command the respect and confidence of inmates or detainees and staff, possessing high tolerance to mental stress.
  • Ability to work with computers and necessary software typically used by the department.
