Transportation Supervisor

The Transportation Supervisor provides frontline leadership and oversight of daily bus operations to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient transportation service. This position supervises and supports bus operators, monitors service performance, responds to operational issues and emergencies, and ensures compliance with LYNX policies, procedures, safety standards, and applicable regulations.
The Transportation Supervisor plays a key role in maintaining service quality by coaching and developing bus operators, addressing performance and customer service concerns, investigating incidents and accidents, and coordinating with dispatch and other departments to resolve service disputes. This position requires strong leadership, sound judgement, effective communication, and the ability to make timely decisions in a fast-paced, 24/7 transit environment.
This position is considered safety-sensitive and subject to the provisions of the Substance Abuse Program Policy for Safety Sensitive Positions.
Essential Functions:
- Perform supervisory duties in LYNX's window dispatch, radio communications center, and field assignments. Incumbents may rotate through both assignments and are expected to obtain training and required certifications for any assignment.
- Manages on-time dispatching of operators to ensure efficient delivery of all (but not limited to), scheduled service, stand-by assignments, "duties" (straight, split runs), part-time "duties" and "trippers" on a daily basis in adherence to the contractual provisions and using independent judgment. Ensures compliance with city, local, state, and federal laws governing transit services. Initiates communication with the city's police, safety, and fire departments as well as local construction companies that might affect service.
- Supervises and counsels bus operators, achieving maximum productivity and high employee morale. Monitors operators by riding the system to evaluate operator efficiency; records absenteeism and tardiness; recommends additional training when needed; writes disciplinary violations on operators; documents information used for progressive discipline in conformance with LYNX policies and the Collective Bargaining Agreement; ensures on-time performance of operators.
- Serves on interview panels and makes recommendations for selection of potential new bus operators and/or transportation supervisors.
- Ensures minimum variation in scheduled bus service and passenger safety through managing on-site street operations, computerized radio equipment; and independent knowledge of LYNX's service area, applicable traffic laws, policies, procedures, and union contract.
- Resolves day-to-day operating problems that arise, including but not limited to vehicle breakdowns, accidents, and missed or late routes. Makes appropriate decisions regarding restoring or maintaining service, using independent judgment.
- Administers and supervises system "Picks" (new schedules and work assignments) to include, but not limited to run, holiday, and special event "Picks".
- Supervises the dispatching of operators in accordance with established schedules. Assigns all day standby (extra-board) assignments, "duties" (straight and split runs), part-time "duties" and "trippers" daily in accordance with LYNX policies and union contract. Responsible for approving and documenting any irregularities in scheduling such as misses.
- Enforces departmental policies, the Work Rules, Memorandums of Agreement, procedures, and employee attendance.
- Maintains informative communications with the public and passengers pertaining to LYNX service, schedules, and necessary changes due to emergencies and special events/circumstances. Resolves passenger disputes related to provision of service. Investigates complaints, to resolution, and communicates same.
- Makes recommendations to management to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, and streamline work processes. Works cooperatively and jointly to provide customer service.
- Monitors conditions of streets, bus stop areas, bus shelters, broken signposts, broken bus stop signs, overhanging tree limbs, overhanging post, etc.; reports findings as needed. Establish detours as necessary.
- Informs Customer Service of adverse weather and road conditions, detours, schedule changes, and delays.
- Investigates and documents employees' injury/workers compensation claims.
- Operates buses during emergency situations. *

- High School diploma or G.E.D. plus two years of supervisory experience.
- Two years of college coursework (at least 60 credit hours) in public transportation or public/business administration, or a related program; or…
