Overview
Summary:
Position is responsible for ensuring code compliance for public safety through inspection of new and existing structures and businesses to work as a fire code enforcement officer pertaining to the Florida Fire Prevention Code and local fire prevention ordinance. The Fire Inspector shall collaborate with the Building Department as needed and is responsible to ensure fire prevention code application for all new construction and Business Tax Receipts.
Conducts fire safety inspections of new and existing buildings which includes plan review.
- Performs skilled plan review of new commercial construction.
- Performs skilled plan review of remodel/addition permits for commercial buildings.
- Performs new, remodel/addition construction inspections for fire code compliance.
- New Construction Training/familiarization with firefighters and Fire Inspection Services for line fire inspection personnel/coordinates annual engine company inspection program.
- Participates in pre-construction meetings/consultations on-site or in the building department.
- Conducts fire safety inspections of new and existing buildings which includes plans reviews for all occupancies prescribed by code as reflected in the Florida Fire Prevention Code.
- Conducts annual School, Day Care, and Nursing Home Inspections.
- Conducts Business Tax Receipt inspections to confirm occupancy type based on use and subsequent life safety plan requirements.
- Reviews new and annual Fire Alarms/Permits.
- Reviews new and annual fire sprinklers.
- Inspects all new and annual Hood and Suppression/Sprinkler/Standpipe Systems permits.
- Create and maintains an accurate list of all fire suppression systems, types, locations, and conducts inspections compliance on an annual basis to include total building inventory governed by the Florida Fire Prevention Code and local fire prevention ordinance.
- Represent the City to ensure sufficient fire flow and utilities compliance serving all properties to ensure water supply for firefighting/protection citywide.
- Represent the Florida Fire Prevention Code with regard to enforcement at all levels, including notices of violations and code compliance processes/present cases.
- Ensure Emergency Services access for all properties during the review and final C.O. process.
- Maintenance of Fire Prevention Ordinance.
- Maintains various records and reports (i.e., inspections performed, permits issued, fire operations incident logs, conditions found, actions taken).
- Interprets fire codes in response to inquiries from architects, engineers, contractors, and the general public.
- Responsible to implement, coordinate, manage, and report inspections via the software consistent with the electronic software packages.
- May perform as needed fire investigations to determine origin and cause.
- Meets attendance requirements.
- Promotes positive customer service environment internally and externally.

- High School diploma or GED; and, one year of experience in performing life and fire safety inspections as a full-time and/or part-time certified fire inspector; or, any combination of education, training and work experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities, required for the job.
- Ability to obtain necessary continuing education to maintain Fire Safety Inspector I Certification.
- Certifications and/or licenses must remain valid for period of employment in this classification.
- Valid Class Florida Driver’s License
