Summer Counselor

Job Overview

Under the direction of the summer director, a summer counselor will provide leadership and implementation of the summer program. This includes instruction of children in groups of up to 14 children. Provide a safe and fun environment for your group. Plan and execute activities.

• Attend all orientation sessions prior to summer program.
• Understand and attend to the needs of children.
• Guide, direct and participate with your group in activities.
• Develop group cohesiveness.
• Assist in the social, mental, and emotional development of the children using values clarification techniques.
• Maintain control of the children in your care at all times.
• Responsible for the health and safety of the children under your supervision.
• Encourage respect for personal property, camp equipment, facilities, and the natural environment.
• Support and assist other summer personnel in all areas of program operation and development.
• Manage personal time in accordance with summer program policies.
• Maintain standards of conduct.
• All other duties as assigned by your supervisor.
• At least 18 years of age (The age minimum may be higher depending on state law and YMCA policies).
• High school graduate or equivalent.
• One year or more of college preferred.
• Previous experience working with children preferably in a summer program setting.
• Experience preferred in recreational group activities.
