DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:
The District seeks a full-time, tenure-track faculty member in the Art discipline with expertise in 3-D studio arts, primarily in ceramics and secondly in sculpture, to teach lower-division studio courses and support related facilities and curriculum.
The 3-D Studio Arts program at Butte College is an integral part of the Art Department, offering students hands-on instruction in ceramics and sculpture. The program emphasizes technical skills, conceptual development, and three-dimensional design through studio-based coursework that supports transfer and related professional pathways. Students engage in material exploration, critique, and creative problem-solving within a structured and well-supported studio environment, including dedicated support from a full-time Ceramics laboratory technician.
The program is committed to inclusive, student-centered teaching practices and seeks dynamic leadership to guide its artistic vision, curriculum development, and expanding role within the Art Department and broader creative disciplines at Butte College.

POSITION DUTIES:
Under the supervision of the Dean of Instruction, the Ceramics/3-D Studio Arts Instructor will develop, prepare, and teach courses for Studio Arts and Ceramics majors, including Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced Ceramics, Low Fire, Sculpture, Sculpture II, Clay, and Gallery Productions. The college is particularly seeking a candidate to serve as a lead faculty member who can provide artistic, curricular, and programmatic leadership for a growing Ceramics and 3-D Studio Art program.
Ideal candidates will possess the competence and energy required to build and maintain a vibrant Ceramics program; lead department initiatives; and provide direction, organization, and outreach and recruitment for the long-range development and community engagement of the Art Department. The instructor will lead the planning and coordination of a dynamic Ceramics program and oversee foundational 3-D Studio Art offerings as well.
In addition to the responsibilities of the representative duties below, the specific position is also responsible for:
* Teach multiple levels of classes for Studio Arts and Ceramics majors which may include Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced Ceramics, Low Fire, Sculpture, Sculpture II, Clay, and Gallery Productions.
* Design and teach lower-division Ceramics and Sculpture courses; and design and deliver lessons and presentations that effectively use a variety of teaching techniques, including active learning and culturally responsive teaching to address issues of equity in the classroom.
* Use a variety of methodologies and modes of instruction including use of a learning management system to provide online course content and interactions/communications with students.
* Work collaboratively within the department and institution to support the needs of the Ceramics program, participating in curriculum development, program review, and in the review and assessment of student learning outcomes and course success rates disaggregated by key demographics to ensure the success of all students.
Advise and mentor visual arts students interested in transfer, professional pathways, or continued study, and serve as a liaison to transfer institutions and community partners as appropriate.
* Participate in connecting with our local high schools and overseeing dual enrollment offerings.
* Organize and host professional opportunities for Ceramics students such as exhibitions, displays, sales, and guest artists.
* Partner with local arts organizations and businesses to provide opportunities and enrichment for students.
* Participate in faculty exhibitions, student exhibitions, and campus events.
* Teaching assignments in a variety of instructional settings and times, including evening and/or weekends, online or at satellite campus, and large group instruction classes as needed.
