Job Description

The Orrick School District is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Director of Special Education for the  school year.

Reports to:

Principals & Superintendent

Job Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited college or university with either an advanced degree in special education or advanced knowledge of the special education process.
  • Teaching certificate for the State of Missouri in a special education field.
  • Training and/or experience working with students with special needs.
  • Training and/or experience working with faculty and staff about students with special needs.
  • Understanding of current research related to special needs, including, but not limited to: learning disabilities, emotional disturbances, behavior disorders, and autism.
  • Ability to utilize data to improve individualized education plans designed to meet the needs of students.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills to effectively support faculty and administration.
  • Demonstrate effective instruction as a teacher.
Position Summary

Leads the administrative oversight of the special education services for the district, including keeping the district in compliance with all areas of IDEA. Helps ensure students with special needs are receiving a free and appropriate public education.

Essential Job Functions
  • Maintain the confidentiality of schools, teachers, and classrooms.
  • Aid in the maintenance of a systematic program for students identified under IDEA.
  • Maintain compliance for Section 504 matters.
  • Help initiate/coordinate professional development activities related to Special Education.
  • Organize and ensure completion of all evaluation reports and IEPs.
  • Administer cognitive, achievement, and adaptive behavior measures as needed and as qualified for all students eligible to receive services under IDEA.
  • Provide for effective day to day operation of the special education program.
  • Monitor student files for compliance.
  • Assist in gathering and analyzing information on student progress in Special Education.
  • Perform as LEA at special education IEP meetings.
  • Oversee special education paraprofessionals, including, but not limited to, trainings, scheduling, evaluations, and distribution of duties.
  • Implement and disseminate details of procedural safeguards.
  • Assist in the preparation of federal, state, and local reports on special education, including leading data collection and entry for Special Education Tiered Monitoring.
  • Serve as a resource of information regarding special education programs and services.
  • Ensure a proper amount of staff as well as self are certified in safe restraint techniques.
  • Review transfer IEPs and complete acceptance paperwork. Coordinate with other districts to attempt to gain needed records.
  • Monitor and adhere to expiration dates and reevaluation dates for students with active IEPs and Section 504 Plans.
  • Research information required to manage assignments (e.g. relevant policies, new federal and state statutory regulations, staffing requirements, financial resources, etc.) for the purpose of developing new programs/services, ensuring program compliance with relevant federal and state requirements, securing general information and/or responding to requests.

Both Elementary and High School Principals Equally in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy and the District’s model of evaluation.

Terms of Employment:
Extended contract and extended hours stipend. Salary and work year to be established by the Board of Education Benefits and leave time as defined in Board Policy. Must be a U.S. citizen and have passed all background checks conducted by the District. Working Environment:
