Job TitlePara educator – Behavior/Learning Assistance Program (LAP)
Job GoalA Behavior/LAP Para educator serves to assist certificated staff with monitoring and documenting student behavior and progress. Incumbents will work under the direction of certificated staff to provide instructional or other appropriate services to students. The person in this position is expected to work as a member of a collaborative team in support of goal setting with students to support their educational learning success.
This position serves under the direction of the building principal(s).
- Supervise activities (under the direction of the principal) of assigned students who have been referred to the restorative room for the purpose of maintaining order and supporting the education environment.
- Maintain individual student attendance data for check in and check out of the intervention support room.
- Utilize the agreed upon behavior reflection tool and goal setting with students.
- Provide encouragement, reinforcement and achievement of educational objectives and goals defined by certificated staff.
- Administer and supervise objective tests or other measurements, under direction of certificated staff.
- Communicate with certificated staff concerning individual student progress; adjust methods to meet the needs of students with a variety of disabilities; consult with certificated staff concerning remediation or enrichment activities.
- Assist certificated staff in maintaining records, logs, charts, assignments and other records for assessment of student progress.
- Work as a member of the instructional team to provide programs and services to eligible students.
- Provide guidance and motivation to students; facilitate mastery of skills concepts; promote completion of work.
- Support students with interpersonal and personal skills mastery.
- Locate, prepare and/or modify materials for student use, enrichment activities and special projects under the direction of certificated staff.
- Prepare, duplicate, collate and distribute materials.
- Assist in student supervision and discipline.
- Attend and participate in all required meetings and other activities deemed necessary by building principals.
- Performs other job related duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- A para educator must meet one of the following:
- Have received a passing score on one of the assessments (e.g., ETS) approved by the board; or
- Hold an associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university; or
- Have earned 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at the 100 level or higher at an accredited college or university.

- Knowledge of rules and procedures for student safety.

- Ability to adapt to change and remain flexible in assignments and tasks.
- Ability to be fair, patient and consistent when working with a diverse student population.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective communication with students, staff, parents and the public.
- Ability to learn effective behavior management techniques and manage student behavior.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritize.
- Ability to learn effective instructional techniques.
- Ability to learn the use and operation of general office machines (e.g., computers, telephone, projector/Vivi) and various software packages for student instruction and record keeping.
- Ability to organize activities.
- Ability to follow and give instructions.
- Ability to use good judgment to maintain a safe learning environment.
Special Requirements
Must be able to pass and maintain a clear background check. May be required to obtain first aid and CPR certification.
Mental DemandsMay experience frequent interruptions; required to deal with a wide range of student behaviors and academic abilities; required to deal with a wide range of physical or emotional disabilities; may occasionally deal with distraught or difficult students.
Physical DemandsRequired to support and deal with a wide range of student academic achievement and behavior; required to remain flexible to meet students immediate needs; may experience frequent interruptions; may deal with students who are not complying with behavior expectations; potentially exposed to ordinary infectious diseases carried by students; in some positions the necessary and appropriate instructional methods may require specific positions and movements, and sufficient stamina and exertions to demonstrate techniques properly for student safety, or to conduct or direct students;
