Position Overview
Nursing Assistant Certified – Full‑Time – Permanent – Washington Soldiers Home – Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs.
Responsibilities- Actively participates in the resident’s care plan for the purpose of improving each resident’s life and maintaining their safety.
- Supports and encourages the resident’s involvement in decision‑making regarding their daily activities.
- Accurately obtains and records vital signs and other resident data in electronic medical records, including documenting intake and output records. Completes charting daily.
- Observes and reports any changes in resident conditions to the Licensed Nurse; documents observations in the resident’s electronic medical record.
- Assists with therapies and treatment under the direction of licensed personnel (RN or LPN).
- Performs daily living care activities such as bathing, dressing, grooming, hygiene, toileting, eating, and assisting with monitoring/feeding of meals; provides care in accordance with each resident’s care plan.
- Assists residents with positioning, transferring, and ambulation.
- Assists with range‑of‑motion exercises under the direction of licensed personnel.
- Performs basic nursing procedures such as applying anti‑embolism stockings and creams or lotions to intact skin under the direction of the licensed nurse.
- Monitors resident equipment for failures; notifies maintenance when a work order is needed.
- Utilizes Hoyer lifts, oxygen tanks, scoop stretchers, or special equipment as needed to perform resident care.
- Responds to call lights, internal and external emergencies, and facility codes; remedies situations within scope and alerts RNs/LPNs of alarms sounding; initiates basic lifesaving procedures.
- Handles resident’s personal clothing, belongings, and equipment; receives and distributes personal laundry, including washing, drying, folding, and operating laundry machines.
- Adheres to infection control procedures; disposes of contaminated waste appropriately; maintains clean and sanitary spaces in resident rooms and common areas.
- Cleans bedpan, washbasin, urinal, commode, bed nightstand, and over‑bed tables; performs additional cleaning chores as assigned.
- Assists in transporting residents, including belongings, supplies, pharmaceuticals, x‑ray films, equipment, and specimens; helps patients to and from vehicles; stays with patients at destination until received; transports and prepares medical gas tanks (oxygen, nitrogen).
- Assists in orienting new Nursing Assistant employees, students, and other patient‑care providers to the facility.
- Current valid Washington State license to practice as a Nursing Assistant Certified.
- Current active status on OBRA (Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act).
- Physical ability to lift 60 pounds and reach a minimum of 36 inches using proper technique.
- Ability to push or pull with sufficient strength and walk, sit, and bend without restriction throughout the entire workday.
- Six months of experience involving customer service in a health‑care setting or direct patient care.
- Read, write, speak, and understand English to facilitate effective and safe clinical care for residents.
- The ability to take action to learn and grow.
- The ability to take action to meet the needs of others.
- Must pass a DSHS BCCU Background Check every two years in accordance with WDVA Policy 615.000 Background Checks.
- Must comply with annual Tuberculin Screening in accordance with DVA policy 670.000 Tuberculosis Testing.
- Must complete medical evaluation, fit testing, training, and use of respiratory protection as required by Washington Industrial Safety and Act standards.
- Must remain current on CPR certification.
- Must maintain valid Nursing Assistant Certification from the Washington State Department of Health.
- Must maintain regular and reliable attendance and be willing to work as needed.
- Must successfully complete orientation and all mandatory annual, in‑service, and other required training.
- Must become familiar with and comply with all DVA policies, procedures, and Collective Bargaining Agreements as applicable.
