Job Overview

Nursing Assistant Certified – Full‑Time – Permanent (Swing) at Washington Soldiers Home. The role provides essential quality of life care for Veterans and their families.

Compensation

Homes 24/7 facility differential:
This position is eligible for Supplement Basic Shift Premium for 24/7 Facilities. Employees receive an additional $1.00 per hour of supplemental basic shift premium for each hour of basic shift premium. The shift premium does not apply to overtime hours. The supplemental basic shift premium expires on June 29, 2027.

Work Schedule

The work schedule will be Tuesday–Saturday from 2:00 PM – 10:30 PM. This position is not eligible for telework.

Responsibilities
  • Actively participates in the resident’s care plan for the purpose of improving the life and maintaining the safety of each resident.
  • Supports and encourages the resident’s involvement in decision making regarding their daily activities.
  • Accurately obtains and records vital signs and other resident data in electronic medical records, including documenting intake and output records, and completes charting daily.
  • Observes and reports any changes in resident conditions to the Licensed Nurse, documenting observations in the resident’s electronic medical record.
  • Assists with therapies and treatments under the direction of licensed personnel (RN).
  • Performs daily living care activities including bathing, dressing, grooming, hygiene, toileting, eating, and assisting with monitoring/feeding of meals while encouraging liquids, as outlined in the care plan.
  • Assists residents with positioning, transferring, and ambulation.
  • Assists with therapies and treatment under the direction of licensed personnel, including range of motion exercises.
  • Performs basic nursing procedures such as applying anti‑embolism stockings, applying creams or lotions to intact skin, under the direction of the licensed nurse.
  • Monitors resident’s equipment for any failures and notifies maintenance when a work order is needed.
  • Utilizes Hoyer lifts, oxygen tanks, scoop stretcher, or special equipment as needed to perform resident care.
  • Responds to call lights, internal and external emergencies, and facility codes; remedies situations within scope and alerts RNs/LPNs of alarms sounding; initiates basic lifesaving procedures.
  • Cares for resident’s personal clothing, belongings, and equipment; receives and distributes resident’s personal laundry including washing, drying, folding, and operating laundry machines.
  • Adheres to infection control procedures; disposes of contaminated waste appropriately; maintains clean and sanitary spaces in resident rooms and common spaces.
  • Cleans bedpans, washbasins, urinals, commodes, bed nightstands, over‑bed tables, and performs additional cleaning chores as assigned.
  • Assists in the transportation of residents and their belongings, supplies, pharmaceuticals, x‑ray films, equipment, and specimens to and from various locations; assists patients to and from vehicles; stays with patients at destination until received; transports and prepares medical gas tanks such as oxygen and nitrogen.
  • Assists in the orientation of new Nursing Assistant employees, students, and other patient care providers to the facility.
Required Qualifications
  • Current valid Washington State license to practice as a Nursing Assistant Certified.
  • Current active status on OBRA (Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act).
  • Must be able to lift 60 pounds and reach a minimum of 36 inches using proper techniques for resident repositioning or access to supplies.
  • Must be able to push or pull with sufficient strength and walk, sit, and bend in an unrestricted manner during the entire workday.
  • Six months experience involving customer service in a health care setting or six months experience involving direct patient care.
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered on a year‑for‑year basis; experience must be relevant to the position.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English to facilitate effective and safe clinical care for residents.
