Food Service Worker – On‑Call

Washington Soldiers Home in scenic Orting, Washington is seeking a dedicated Food Service Worker to ensure safe and sanitary food distribution and to support the nutritional needs of our veterans.

Eligible for a supplemental basic shift premium of $1.00 per hour for 24/7 facilities. The premium will expire on June 29, 2027.

• Serve foods in the cafeteria or on the serving line following portion guidelines and recipes.
• Serve hot and cold foods on the cafeteria line using therapeutic diet principles and monitoring safe serving temperatures.
• Prepare food, clean and sanitize equipment and areas, and perform other assigned duties.
• Comply with safe food handling practices and sanitation principles.
• Deliver food and equipment to and from assigned areas and kitchens.
• Frequently lift, push, pull, and handle up to 40 lbs; occasionally up to 60 lbs.

Required:

• Valid Washington State food worker card.
• Dependability, teamwork, and communication skills.
• Proficient in English (reading, speaking, writing).

Preferred/Desired:

• Degree or certificate in culinary arts.
• Serv Safe certification.
• Experience in a geriatric or healthcare institutional setting.
• Experience working with residents with dementia and/or mental health diagnoses.
• Ability to organize, prioritize multiple projects and meet deadlines in a time‑sensitive environment.
• Knowledge of therapeutic diet planning, preparation, and serving of special diets.

• Pass a DSHS BCCU background check every two years.
• Comply with annual tuberculin screening.
• Complete required medical evaluations, fit testing, and training related to respiratory protection.
• Learn all current modified/therapeutic diets.
• Lift up to 60 lbs and reach a minimum of 36 in., with sufficient strength to push or pull supplies.
• Maintain reliable attendance and willingness to work as needed.
• Complete all mandatory orientation and training within mandated time frames.
• Familiarize with and comply with all WAVA policies, procedures, and collective bargaining agreements.
• Sign the confidentiality statement for all employees.
• For positions requiring travel, hold a valid unrestricted driver’s license and insurance if driving a privately owned vehicle for state business.
• Have work authorization that does not require employer sponsorship for a visa now or in the future.
