Individuals interested in applying as a substitute driver must first contact the Transportation Supervisor / Assistant Operations Supervisor at  – Ext. 4388.

We provide driver’s license training for CDL. Training takes approximately six weeks. During classroom time, trainers receive $16.66 minimum wage.

2025‑26 Substitute Rate: $27.65 (includes driver training up to and as a CDL holder, and route training).

QUALIFICATIONS
  • A valid motor vehicle operator’s license with class B or higher Commercial Driver Endorsement (CDL) with passenger and air brake endorsement.
  • Good physical condition.
  • Ability to exit the driver’s seat and leave the emergency door within 20 seconds.
  • Ability to relate to students, staff and parents.
  • Ability to perform duties with students on the bus.
  • Ability to work independently with little or no supervision.
  • Valid first aid and CPR certification.
  • Work Skills Assessments:
    Achieve minimum acceptable levels/scores in reading and/or math assessments.
  • Must be able to pass a DOT physical and drug screening requirements.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma or equivalent.

Have at least five years of experience as a licensed driver of a passenger vehicle.

REQUIRED LICENSES / SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must successfully complete a Washington State Patrol and a Federal Bureau of Investigation background and criminal history check pursuant to RCW 43.43.830/832.
  • Meet all requirements for holding a school bus driver authorization, including a review of a five‑year abstract of your driving record.
  • Must successfully complete a school bus driver training program facilitated by an authorized school bus driver instructor.
PERFORMANCE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Pre‑trip/Post‑trip functions of school vehicle as outlined in the Orting School District Driver’s Handbook:
    • Check fuel level and fill when fuel is under half tank.
    • Check oil level, water level, wiper washer water level, wipers, and tires.
    • Check outside of vehicle for any new damage and inside for any cut seats or vandalism.
    • Check all lights.
    • Check all emergency exits from both inside and out.
    • Check mirrors for proper adjustment.
    • Maintain clean windows, inside and out.
    • Check fire extinguisher, first aid kit, body fluid clean up kit, and emergency triangles to ensure they are present and working properly.
    • At the end of each route, inspect bus interior, pick up anything left, and look for sleeping children.
  • Clean the bus as required.
  • Attend to students’ special needs as outlined in the Driver’s Handbook.
  • Handle student discipline as outlined in the Driver’s Handbook.
  • Maintain current route maps.
  • Comply with standards and expectations outlined in the Driver’s Handbook.
  • Perform other duties as required by supervisor.

    For on‑call positions, eligibility for benefits is determined by the number of hours worked during the last two school years. Some on‑call positions may not be benefit eligible.

    Regular employees who are not in on‑call positions and are anticipated to work 630 hours or more in a year are eligible for the following benefits: medical, dental, vision, retirement, life insurance, long‑term disability, and the employee assistance program.
