Job DescriptionThe Automation Controls Engineer will be a key member of the Advanced Manufacturing team within the Amcor Flexibles North America (AFNA) division and will report directly to the Director of Flexibles Advanced Manufacturing. This role will be responsible for assisting in defining, deploying, and governing standardized control system architectures across robotic and automated manufacturing environments. In addition, this role focuses on robotic/vision/AGV/AMR integration, Ignition-based SCADA systems, and PLC standardization, ensuring scalable, secure, and maintainable automation solutions across multiple production sites.
This individual serves as a technical authority, partnering with manufacturing, IT/OT, safety, and external integrators to deliver world‑class automation systems that improve safety, reliability, and operational performance.
- Aligns with and actively supports Amcor values by putting safety first in all situations. Serves as a role model to others by ensuring that all project work is completed in accordance with our safety policies.
- Participates/collaborates with Project Teams to develop and implement end‑to‑end solutions for integrating automation on a plant/assembly line level.
- Define and implement PLC, HMI, SCADA, and robotic control standard architectures for enterprise deployment.
- Develop and maintain PLC programming standards, reusable function blocks, AOIs, templates, and naming conventions.
- Establish standardized Ignition SCADA & Vision System frameworks including tag models, UDTs, alarming, historization, security, and visualization standards.
- Maintain version control, change management, and backup strategies for control system software.
- Integration of industrial robots & AGVs/AMRs including motion coordination, safety, and peripheral integration.
- Define standard approaches for robot–PLC communication, cell control, error handling and recovery.
- Identifies and develops high‑impact automation use cases that deliver competitive advantage. Leads technical scope definition, integrated solution design, risk identification and mitigation, and supports development of the business case.
- Support automation/vision system design reviews, risk assessments, FAT/SAT, and onsite commissioning.
- Provides comprehensive project management support, including schedule management, budget oversight, and stakeholder communication. Prepares detailed project status reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing key information and trends, proactively identifying risks and recommending appropriate mitigation strategies.
- Partners with cross‑functional teams to define system requirements, develop specifications, design small to large‑scale automation concepts, execute proof‑of‑concepts to reduce technical risk, select external partners, support RFQ processes, lead implementation, and ensure long‑term sustainability/maintainability across plant operations.
