Position: Health Information Management (HIM) Technician

At Mahaska Health the primary role of the Health Information Technician is to manage and organize patient health information, ensuring its accuracy, accessibility, and security. You will be responsible for chart deficiencies, scanning, categorizing patient data, as well as maintaining electronic health records (EHR) with the utmost attention to detail and confidentiality.

Essential Job Functions Include But Are Not Limited To
  • Assemble records, review for chart deficiencies and route to appropriate destination for completion, according to established guidelines.
  • Scan Internal and external forms/documents into the appropriate chart/dividers, according to departmental procedures.
  • Handles requests for release of information, verifies valid authorizations and maintains ROI tracking log.
  • Handles distribution of incoming and outgoing mail, pneumatic tube station and fax machine material.
  • Collaborate closely with healthcare professionals, administrators, and IT specialists to implement and maintain health information systems that support optimal patient care. Purges/destroys old records according to departmental guidelines.
  • Answers phone, assist walk-ins, handles requests for information appropriately.
  • Complies with departmental and company policies and procedures.
Job Responsibilities Include But Are Not Limited To
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Proficient in health data management software and is knowledgeable about medical terminology, coding systems, and healthcare regulations. PC proficiency, experience with IP and OP hospital insurance claims filing and reimbursement principles desired.
  • Possess strong analytical skills, a commitment to accuracy, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to use and operate office equipment.
  • Will be required to show proof of having completed Mandatory Reporter course at the time of hire or attend within 6 months of the start date.
  • Must adhere to all training requirements as mandated by Federal, State, and Professional licensure and regulatory standards.
