Job Description

JOB TITLE:

Instructional Assistant

SUMMARY

Assists teaching staff by performing any combination of the tasks designated below.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning concepts taught by the teacher.
  • Guides independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work assigned by the teacher.
  • Checks notebooks, corrects papers, and supervises testing and makeup work assigned by the teacher.
  • Reads to students, listens to students read, and participates in other forms of oral communication with students.
  • Assists the teacher with bulletin board and other classroom learning displays; prepares teaching aids; makes copies.
  • Alerts the teacher to any problem or special information about a student.
  • Assists with lunch supervision as required.
  • Guides students in working and playing harmoniously.
  • Assists with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips.
  • Provides information to assist a substitute teacher in the assigned classroom.
  • Maintains the same high-level ethical standards of behavior and confidentiality as a fully licensed teacher.
  • Performs such other tasks as may from time to time be assigned.
  • QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

    Some college training; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    LANGUAGE SKILLS

    Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to communicate effectively with children, parents, and employees of the school corporation.

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

    Ability to work with mathematical concepts appropriate for a teacher assistant in the assigned classroom.

    REASONING ABILITY

    Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

    OTHER SKILLS

    Ability to utilize technology appropriate to the functions of this job. Ability to work effectively with several activities and some interruptions.

    The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

    The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the Corporation.

    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

    Terms of contract to be determined by the School Board.

    EVALUATION

    Performance will be evaluated by the building principal in accordance with School Board policy.

    WORK HOURS AND COMPENSATION

    This position is Monday through Friday averaging 32.5-37.5 hours per week. Daily hours are 6-7.5 hours per day. Starting pay is $16.50 per hour.
